Israel's 'Modern
Woman' Picked
for Aid to Others
TEL AVIV — Mrs. Roni
Silberschatz, a lawyer and
the mother of three small
children, was recently chosen
Israel's "Modern Woman
1972" — and immediately
donated one of her prizes to
a large and needy family.
Mrs. Silberschatz had com-
peted with seven other semi-
finalists in social service,
cooking, driving, flower ar-
ranging and personality in
the two-day finals held at
WIZO headquarters here.
The contest was organized
by the "Modern Times" sec-
tion of the newspaper Yediot
Ahronot and WIZO — under
the sponsorship of commer-
cial companies which manu-
facture and sell cosmetic:
and household appliances. It
attracted 300 contestants.
Bella Almog, "Modern
Times" editor and "spiritual
mother" of the contest ex-
plained: "The idea came
from Italy, where the 'ideal
woman' is chosen each year
in an international contest,
"When we were invited to
enter I objected because the
Italian contest emphasizes
cooking, preparing cocktails
and other feminine household
chores. We felt it was im-
portant that here in Israel
We should recognize those
women who volunteer their
services on behalf of others.
"We demanded everything
the Italian contest demand-
ed, since our winner will
participate in the Italian con.
test as Israel's representa-
tive. But our main require-
ment was that she be an in-
telligent woman involved in
what's going on around her,
and active in helping
others," Mrs. Almog said.
The winner and her three
