THE DETROIT JEWISN MEWS

President Zalman Shazar of Israel is shown with the
Lubavitcher Rebbe, Menahem M. Shneersohn, at the lengthy
session in the Brooklyn residence of the Rebbe, midnight
Sunday to Monday morning. With them are Rabbi M. A.
Hadakov, director of Mercos L'Inyonei Chinuch; Dr. Nis-
sen Mindel, aercetary of the Mercos; Rabbi Joseph Wein-
berg, director of Nshei Chabad; Rabbi Abraham Shemtov,
brother of Rabbi Berryl of Detroit; and other notables in
the Chabad movement.

Shazar: Soviet Emigres Are Israel's Future

NEW YORK (JTA)—Soviet
Jewish immigrants in Israel
represent the cultural and
spiritual future of the Jewish
nation, and their talents and
contributions must be en-
couraged and nutured.
This view was expressed
by Israeli President Zalman
Shazar during an hour-long
meeting with 40 Jewish and
Israeli journalists.
Speaking in Yiddish, the
83-year-old statesman des-
cribed how the Soviet Jews,
"who come to Israel out of a
thick entangled jungle that is
the Soviet Union," are com-
pletely dedicated to building
a Jewish life for themselves
in their new home.
He noted that many of the
Soviet Jews become integrat-
ed after six months in ab-
sorption centers but that
some find it difficult to re-
late to the new Israeli scene
and must find ways of over-
coming cultural and psycho-
logical hurdles.

man.

The statement declared
"the Israel he recognized 2f,
years ago and aided in its

through the Negev and Eilat,
the vital importance of which
he so fully perceived."

Mr. Truman was lauded
as "even more than a great

period of vast historic up-

very different."

Shazar's statement conclud-

long history and memory. In
that history and memory
President Truman has, and
will always have, a unique
and glorius place. We mourn
him and remember him with
reverence and infinite grati-

At the memorial service,
Shazar was accorded a front

the top American and foreign
dignitaries, including Soviet
Ambassador Anatoly F. Doh-

Later, he attended a recep-
