Katz of Temple Beth El,
sent a copy of an article
from the September Ameri-
can Jewish Historical Quar-

cussion by Prof. Moshe
Davis.
Prof. Davis, head of the
Institute of Contemporary
Jewry at the Hebrew Uni-
versity, said at a 1970 col-
loquium:
"One day, in 1953, Presi-
dent Truman, at that time
already past-President Tru-
man, visited the Jewish
Theological Seminary with
Eddie Jacobson (his friend
and one-time co-worker in
their haberdashery busi-
ness). In the course of the
conversation with Prof. Fin-
kelstein and Prof. Marx —
I was in the room — Eddie
Jacobson, waving his hand
toward HST, proclaimed:
This is the man who helped
create the state of Israel.'
And Truman, without a
blink, responded: 'What do
you mean "helped create"?
I am Cyrus, I am Cyrus,'
evoking the biblical imagery
of Cyrus who made possible
the return of the Jews to
Jerusalem.

HOLLYWOOD — A dinner
attended by more than 1,00('
movie stars and celebrities
paid tribute Sunday night to
film pioneer Adolph Zukor
on his 100th birthday. For
the privilege of taking a can-
dle off the 14-foot high cake,
they paid $1,000 apiece to
charity.
Zukor, who is credited with
having founded Hollywood's
motion picture industry,
headed Paramount Pictures
from the days of silents to
his showing of two-reel
movies.
It was recalled that in 1912
Zukor and Cecil B. DeMille
boarded a train from New
York for Flagstaff, Ariz., to
film a western. When the
train stopped at Flagstaff, it
was raining, so the two znen
stayed aboard till Los An-
geles. There, they set up their
cameras ni the orange groves
now known as Hollywood.
In 1917, his five-year-old
Famous Players Company
was merged with several
companies, and Paramount
was born.
