The first Jewish-sponsored
residence for mentally re-
tarded adults will be intro-
duced to the public at an
open house 1-5 p.m. Jan. 21.
Called Haverim House
(Haverim is Hebrew for
"friends"), the residence is
at 1973.5 Evergreen, near
Pembroke Ave.
There are five residents in
the home, which is sponsored
by the Parents Association
for Jewish Residential Care.
All five are considered mod-
erately retarded and are
capable of meeting their own
basic needs. All have jobs,
the majority in special work-
shop setups.
A converted two-story flat
that once was called Sheruth
House, it contains resident
bedrooms, a kitchen, dining
room, living room and quar-
ters for the houseparents.
The latter are Boaz and
Debra Eflal, ■ young couple
who live on the premises.
Eflal, who is Israeli born,
is working on a masters de-
gree in psychology; his wife
is a former school teacher.
Ed Mandell, who is execu-
tive director of the home,
said the Mills bring to their
job a dedication and involve-
ment that would be difficult
to duplicate.

cellent cook, said Mandell.
They keep a busy sched-
ule, thanks to the Eflals and
a relief supervisor, Maryann
Whitty, who takes over on
the Eflals' Tuesday and Sat-
urday days off. On Sundays
and Thursdays, the residents
attend Jewish Center meet-
ings and several take classes
at Ferndale High School two
evenings a week. On Friday
night after a traditional Sab-
bath meal, they have been
attending temple services
and going out afterward.
Saturday outings often are
followed by activities, includ-
ing arts and crafts. Sunday
