Gold- berg, pen name of Ben Zion Waife, son-in-law of Sholom' Aleichem, died last Friday. in a Tel Aviv hospital, He was 78. A writer for Jewish publi- cations in the U.S. and cor- respondent for Israeli news- papers, Mr. Goldberg (the name with which he achieved fame) was a columnist for more than 50 years for The Day Jewish Morning Journal, which was the largest Yid- dish-language daily news- paper here until its publi- cation ended last year. Mr. Goldberg came to the U.S. in 1907. He received a BS degree at Columbia Uni- versity in 1918 and an MA in psychology in 1919. At Columbia, he joined with stu- dents who knew Yiddish to help newly arrived immi- grants with language prob- lems. Mr. Goldberg got the apart- ment and Sholom Aleichem's daughter too. He and the former Marie Rabinowitz (Aleichem's real name was Solomon Rabinowitz) were soon married. Rubin, director of the Jew- ish National Fund Founda- tion of Greater New York and author of books on Is- rael, died of a heart attack last Thursday. He was 62. During Israel's early years as a state, Dr. Rubin was a member of the Provisional Council of State. He edited several Israeli newspapers and later became a corres- pondent for them. Among his works was "Pictorial History of Israel." Dr. Rubin, a native of Po- land, earned degrees in law and diplomatic studies at the University of Lvov. He emi- grated to Israel, where he worked in farming, road building and journalism. In World War II, he served in the Jewish Brigade, and saw action in North Africa and Italy.
