Cancer-Fighting Machine the Most
Powerful of Its Kind, at Sinai Hospital

special supports in case of
an earthquake.
Charles McDonough, repre-
sentative of Profex Ray, a
division of Litton Industries,
the exclusive distributor of
Toshiba therapy equipment
in the U. S., said the ac-
celerator would take about
four to six months to install.
Profex and Toshiba engi-
neers will be coming to Sinai
to install the machine, Mc-
Donough said.

Sinai Hospital's Srere Ra-
diotherapy Center last Fri-
day received the first portion
of its 16,000,000-electron-volt
linear accelerator, designed
to treat cancer patients with
radiation or X-ray therapy.
Of the six such machines in
the world, this is the most
powerful.

Purchase of the machine
and preparations were made
possible by a $643,000 grant
from the James and Lynelle
Holden Fund.

Produced by Toshiba In-
dustries in Tokyo, the ma-
chine took two weeks by ship
to get to Los Angeles. From
there, it was shipped in a
specially-built flatbed truck
to Sinai.

Joseph Mantel, consultant
radiological physicist at Sinai,
worked with Toshiba engi-
neers in Japan to modify the
machi'ne's energy up to the
16 MEV (million electron
volt) capacity.

The accelerator bombards
tumor tissue with a beam of
electrons activated to the
speed of light (186,281 miles
per second), or X-rays, de-
pending on the treatment re-
quired.

The advantage over Cobalt
or X-ray therapy is the ac-
celerator's ability to pinpoint
and deliver a maximum dose
of radiation to the tumor and
protect healthy tissue that
surrounds it.
An adjacent room has been
prepared for a simulator and
transverse axial tomograph.
Here the patient can be posi-
tioned and diagnostically X-
rayed on a machine that re-
sembles the accelerator in
size and appearance, simu-
lating actual treatment. The
tomograph can X-ray cross-
sections of the body.
Like the accelerator, the
simulator can revolve com-
pletely around the patient.
"Rotation is necessary so
that the beam (of electrons)
can penetrate from different
angles," Dr. Harold Perry,
chief of radiology at Sinai,
said.
Both fluoroscopy and radio-
graphs can be obtained. The

X-rays can be processed in
90 seconds and are then
evaluated by the physician.
With the help of the physi-
cist, treatment is planned
using a computer, via phone
hookup with Wayne State
University's computer cen-
ser.
When the patient is ready
to be treated, the exact size
of the electron or X-ray
beam and the amount of
radiation at any given point
in the 360-degree rotation
can be automatically changed
by pressing a button. An-
other computer stores treat-
ment and progress data on
each patient. Actual ex-
posure to radiation lasts less
than a minute.
Another feature of the ac-
celerator is the collimator, a
tube that directs the electron
or X-ray beam. It can direct
the beam in an infinite num-
ber of shapes to conform to
the shape of the tumor.
Preparation for setting up
the linear accelerator in-
cluded the excavation of an
opening in the cement walls
of the building large enough
to accept the 15-foot by 11-
foot crate containing the
main part of the mechanism.
The walls, floor and ceiling
of the room that houses the
accelerator are 7 feet thick.
Running along the ceiling are
heat ducts and electrical
wiring.
A hydraulic crane capable
of carrying 30 tons was hired
to lift the 18-ton crate. The
trucking crew took more
than an hour to lift the crate
from the truck, lower it into
the opening of the building
and roll it along a row of
logs to get it halfway inside.
When it is completely inside,
it will be centered in a 7
foot foundation made witth

Minister Opposes
Gaza Regional Center

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Is-
rael's cabinet decided to
establish a regional center in
the Raffah approach, just
below the southern tip of the
Gaza Strip, to provide serv-
ices for the new settlements
in the region and for Israel
defense units in and around
the area.
Israel Galilee, minister
without portfolio, t old the
cabinet that plans call for
settling 305 families in the
regional center by 1975.
Asorption Minister Natan
Pried of Mapam voted
against the plan. Mapam's
official policy is that the set-
tlement plan in the Raffah
approach is politically and
economically unwise.

Talrnd

An electrical engineer and
a physicist are needed to
service the machine that
functions on five megawatts.
The machine is capable of
generating its own electrical
power.
Thirty to 40 patients a day
can be treated with the
linear accelerator, Dr. Perry
said.
Dr. Julien Priver, execu-
tive vice president of the
hospital, said this equipment
is available to any individual
who is referred by a physi-
cian for consultation and
treatment.
