This is unlikely, but I present it as one of the possible reasons for the dearth of Jewish competi- tors. The likelihood is strong that our youngsters, boys and girls alike, are going in for the more sophisticated sports, basically, golf and tennis. While football has suffered the past two years and bask- etball, until this year, has shown a fall-off, golf and ten- nis have been getting a heavy play, and we do have some excellent men and wom- en playing at the collegiate level. Selecting an All-Jewish team is hazardous since the writer or compiler is at the mercy of press agents from some 400 colleges. The Jew- ish Telegraphic Agency, ask- ed more than 400 schools about their Jewish players. We have managed to com- pile one squad which cer- tainly is not the best in the history of the Jew on the American football scene. It's a fair team, and that's stretching it a might; it's a squad that has some heft, a couple of good ends, a few decent running backs but a paucity of interior linemen. I would have to say that 548-3650 ■ ish Telegraphic Agency. Originally, at the turn of the century, it was boxing which was spawned as a mat- ter of self-defense. From box- ing the attention moved to basketball which was widely played due to the fact that space was at a premium and basketball courts were small and compact From basket- ball, the Jewish athlete swung over to football. Roger Cowan, a 0.5, 245-pounder at Stan- ford; Randy Grossman, a tight end for Temple, and Mitch Berger, an All-Ivy at Harvard, who goes 6 - 4. 235- pounds, comprises a good end squad by any standards. The interior linemen in- clude Dave Spungien of In- diana, Bob Arolsky of Col- gate, and Steve Fromang of Maryland. In the backfield, there are a couple of boys who bear mentioning. One is Mitchell Farbstein, a real tough, scrappy fullback at Buck- nell, who is compact at 5-11, 210-pounds, rather on the small side to possibly make it in the pros. Ile led the Bisons to an exceptional sea- son with his outstanding ef- forts. (Inc bark who may. de- spite his small size, get con- siderable recognition by the pros because of his ability to run back kicks is Buzzy Rosenberg of Georgia. Ile served as a specialist in this area for the Bulldogs and made the All-Conference team the past two seasons. An unusual development during the past season wit- nessed a young Israeli named Avi Rote, who is 5-5, 130 pounds dripping wet. He served as the placekicker for Brooklyn College. Avi, as a freshman, displayed so much skill, that he is being lured away, apparently, to a South- ern college, where his kick- ing prowess will stand in better - 3-IdIct. -The 111 g - Coneyes are making a fetish, much like the pros, out of securing specialists in placekicking, and if Avi does well at his new destination, then he con- ceivably will go on to pro ball.
