Rabin
Attend Truman
'Memorial

Shazar,

WASIIINGTOti (JTA) —
President
Zalman Shazar;

Eliahu Eilat, Israel's first

ambassador to
the United
States: and Itzhak Rabin, re-

tiring Israeli ambassador to

the U S., will represent Israel

at the memorial service for
the late President Harry S.
Truman here.
The respect and esteem
which the people of Israel
felt for the late President
was demonstrated when two
top-ranking Israeli diplomats
flew to Independence, Mo., to
pay final respects.
Rabin and Shaul Ramiti,
consul general of Israel for
the Midwest, visited the Tru-
man Library where Presi-
dent Truman was lying in
state.
Rabin and Ramati were
the first foreign diplomats to
view the flag-draped coffin
and to stand in silent tribute
to President Truman. They
told the Kansas City Jewish
Chronicle later that they had
come on their own initiative
"to demonstrate our feelings
of respect and gratitude to
President Truman."
They did not visit the Tru-
man family. The diplomats
said they "wished to avoid in-
truding on the family in their
hour of grief.•' They did not
attend the Truman funeral
Dec. 28.

JERUSALEM—A study of
ways to encourage reading
among immigrant and disad-
vantaged youth is being un-
dertaken by the Hebrew Uni-
versity's graduate library
school, one of a number of
projects sponsored by 'he
Ora Memorial Fund.
The fund ("Yad Ora") was
established by Tel Aviv at-
torney Yehudah Fraenkel in
memory of his daughter, Ora
Fraenkel Cohen, who held
the post of senior librarian
in the New York Public Li-
brary when she was killed in
an airplane crash over Bul-
garia in July 1955.
The aim of the IL 120,000
($30,000) fund is to support
research on librarianship by
teachers and students of the
graduate library school.
The fund's first project is
research on the compilation
of a Reader's Guide to Isra-
eli Periodical Literature.
The reading incentive proj
ect was chosen as a second
activity to be supported by
the fund, this one in coop-
eration with Youth Aliya.

JERUSALEM — The ord-
nance corps of the army has
opened a factory school in
collaboration with the min-
istry of labor and the ORT
vocational school network in
Israel.
The army newspaper re
ports that the purpose of the
school is to train youth, most-
ly from large and poor fam•
ilies, and teach them techni-
cal skills. These skills will
enable them to do technical
tasks during their military
service and even after their
release from the army.
The school is teaching au-
to-mechanics this year, but
additional fields will be
taught in the future. At the
end of the course, the youths
will take vocational tests pre
pared by the ministry of
labor anti• will he certified as
