A LABOR OF LOVE by
Lou Bower has resulted thus
far in 376 ex-convicts, pro-
bationers and parolees being
placed in various jobs since
Aug. 1 . "It's like being
a social worker without go-
ing to college," says Lou,
who has processed over 500
cases and receives 15 re-
ferrals daily ... Percy Kap-
lan, executive director of the
Jewish National Fund, had
heard about the Michigan
Convicts Aid, Inc., through
our paper . .. about it being
a nonprofit organization
founded in 1971 by James
Burwell . . . Percy had re-
ceived a letter from an in-
mate at Jackson State Prison
. . who will be released in
January and who, because of
this fine group, will be
placed with the Motor City
Truck Maintenance Co. own-
ed by Burwell . . . Client
gives no money, and here's
the amazing bit . - Lou
volunteered his services un-
til funds are made available
. . and is living on social
welfare . . . $69.50 every
two weeks!

FINAL DATE IS DEC. 31
to get in your nominations
for the community's 10 best
dressed men contest by the
column . . . Selections will
then be by a ballot to be
printed in The Jewish News
with names on it of all nom-
inees, accompanied by a box
alongside for marking . .
More names sent in are
Harry Kosins, Sidney Eisner,
Gary Marcus, Sidney Blue-
stone, Jack Schon, Sol Cohen,
Michael Weiner and Law-
rence Sklar.
JACK ERMAN IS THE
new president of Furniture
Club of Detroit, taking over
from retiring head Gerald
Snitz . . , Max Lipin is first
vice president and Max
Brose, second vice president
. The Furniture Club with
its almost 200 members, was
formed about 40 years ago
and has sent thousands of
underprivileged kiddies to
summer camp . . - The club
now meets at Nine Mile and
Haggerty Rds., but will
move to 10 Mile and Tele-
graph this coming year, in
a planned two-story building
of 9,000 square feet and 100-
car parking.

AT DETROIT NEWS All-
State Football Awards ban•
quet recently at the Raleigh
House, "Cincy" Sachs was
presented with "Citizen of
the Year" award for his con-
tribution to sports throughout
the years . . . The only
basketball team that "Cincy"
had coached to city and state
championships was the old
Riptons of the Hannah
Schloss Building (1925-26) ...
no losses in two years . . .
Only fellows left from that
team are "Suzie" Schechter
and Sam "Sue" Gurwin .
Gone are Carl Gussin, Mor-

vie Epstein, Jack Tucker, AI
Tenenbaum and Ted Blatt.
WHOEVER SAID THAT
haste makes waste would
never get Adeline and Abner
Rosenzweig to believe it ..
She was living in Chicago,
he in Detroit when Abner
sent her a letter, came into
Chicago for a week and ask-
ed her to marry him . . .
The 29th anniversary of their
whirlwind romance is a
happy occasion.
CONGRATS TO HENRY
ABRAMS on his 79th birth-
day . . wife Essie loves
him more each year, too ...
Date is also second anni-
versary of Henry's cousins,
Shelley and Dr. Sidney Leit-
son ... more congrats, folks.
WHAT IS A JEWISH snow-
man? . . Fresh Air Society
bulletin tells of the world's
biggest one to be built on
DeRoy Field by Camp
Tamarack campers attend-
ing the seventh annual Na-
ture Winter Weekend, Jan.
5-7 . . . Maybe coordinator
Barney Brown or resource
specialist Burt Levenson
know . . . if so, fellows, how
about letting us in on the
secret?
JEAN SCHWARTZ, worthy
matron of Purity Chapter,
Order of the Easter Star, is
mother of past master Ron-
ald Schwartz, State of Michi-
gan Masonic Grand Marshall
... and of Sheldon Schwartz.
incoming worshipful master
of Craftsman Lod ge .
IN PHRASING AN intro-
duction for the guest of
honor at a banquet, how
about these suggestions - •
(1) "Here's the man about
whom the President once
said, "Who on earth is that?"
. • . (2) "When our honored
guest came to this city, he
was flat broke. Today he
owes over $300" . . (3) "In
his last appearance he drew
a line three blocks tong.
Then they took his chalk
away."
DON ALAN at The Top Hat
in Windsor is a pleasingly

clever entertainer whose
i making people happy
forte is
with a versatile act that in-
cludes delightful audience
repartee, comedy and unus-
ually good magic . . . the
latter bringing forth unbe-
lievable tricks Don used to
amaze TV audiences on the
Johnny Carson and Dick Ca-
vett shows among others.
THE APPEARANCE OF
Jerry Lewis at the Michigan
Palace isn't out of the pic-
ture yet, even though he can-
celed his December date
"because of movie commit-
ments" . . Negotiations are
still going on . . In the
meantime, Johnny Mathis
has been signed for early in

February . . . and Robert
Goulet for March .22 . . .
January's lineup so far has
Gladys Knight and The Pips
opening the first week, Count
Basie, Jan. 11, and Myron
Cohen, Jan. 17.
