Regional Educators Assembly
Meets at Flint Congregation

The attitudes and practices
of fathers have no statistical-
ly significant relationship to
whether or not their children
remain in religious school
after Bar or Bat Mitzva, ac-
cording to Dr. Sidney Selig,
educational director of the
Beth Shalom Religious School
of Oak Park and president
of the Michigan-Ohio Region
of the Educators Assembly.

Addressing a meeting of
the region at Cong. Beth Is-
rael, Dr. Selig cited results
of a study undertaken in or-
der to establish a "Drop-Out
Profile"
(See
story else-
where). Such a statistically
verified profile would help
educators identify potential
dropouts early in their school
career and work with them
and their families, he said.
Among the factors that
seem to encourage continu-
ing studies are home ob-
servances, attendance at a
Jewishly oriented summer
ramp and a positive attitude
on the part of the mother.
Rabbi Gerald Teller, direc-
tor of the Shaarey Zedek
School of Southfield, report.
ed on new courses in history
and values. Students are in-
troduced to the craft of his-
tory by writing historical
materials based upon inter-
views with their own fami-
lies and synagogue records.
In another course, imagi-
nary and computer lan-
guages are used to help stu-
dents see "prayer language"
as a specialized medium of
communication.

in December.
The January and February

with Temple Beth El, will
deal with "The Jewish Com-
munity in the '70s—Where Is
It Going?" The January pro-
gram, at Beth El, will fea-
ture Rabbi Robert Marx, a
prominent liberal spokes-
man. The February program
at Beth Israel will have as
its guest, Prof. Seymour Sie-
gel, president of the Jewish
Rights Council.

Alternate Sunday mornings
at 9, parents are urged to
"Don't Drop Off, Drop In"
for coffee discussion. On

the local drug abuse com-
mission discussed "Drugs—
Facts and Fantasies."

ginning Jan. 13, services go
on a new schedule. Begin-
