Learning Abou t Presidency

By DAVID SCHWARTZ

Being President of the
United States is not such a
great task after all. As Dr.
Chaim Weizmann told Presi-
dent Harry S. Truman , he ,
Truman, was only President
of the United States, but Dr.
Weizmann was President of
a nation of presidents.
•
This is a good time to talk
a little bit about President
Weizmann, the first presi-
dent, the George Washington
of Israel, because it's his
birthday this month. In No-
vember 1973, there will be
more ado about him because
1973 will mark the centennial
of his birth.
The career of Weizmann in
many ways parallels that of
Washington. It is true that as
a boy, Weizmann never chop-
ped down a cherry tree, but
his father was in the lumber
business and if Chaim Weiz-
mann himself never chopped
down any trees, he helped
the Jewish National Fund
plant many trees in Israel.
Also, there Is a legend that
one time he chopped down a
pine branch, "Father, I can-
not tell a lie," he said. "I
chopped It down to cover the
Sukka."
Washington was the unan-

imous choice of all for Presi-
dent. His cabinet reflected
this unanimity. The Federal-
ist Alexander Hamilton was a
member of Washington's
cabinet as was the Democrat
Thomas Jefferson.
Weizmann too was the
unanimous choice. It is true
that for a time David Ben-
Gurion flirted with the hope
that Albert Einstein would
a c c e p t the presidency of
Israel, but Einstein didn't
want the job. He liked to
walk about in sandals, and if
he bec a me president, he
would have to put on shoes
and Einstein wanted full free-
dom for his feet.
Once Einstein was out, the
choice of Weizmann was in-
evitable. If an election had
been held, there is no ques-
tion but that he would have
been overwhelmingly chosen.

He was Mr. Zionism, a
man of culture, an illustrious

scientist, a world figure.
It is easy to see how Weiz-
mann became a Zionist. He
was one of 15 children. With
a family like that, everyone
needs a homeland.
Birth control is probably a
good thing bdt• for a family
like the Wcizmanns, we
should grant licenses to ex-
ceed the limit. The Weiz-
mann family is like the fam-
ily of Franklin. Franklin was
the last of 17 children. How
much poorer America would
be if Franklin, the 17th, had
not been born.
In some ways large fam-
ilies can be an advantage. A
family of 15 or 17, can't live
as cheaply as one, but such a
family could probably get a
discount at the grocery. Be-

sides, if one has 17 children,

like Ben Franklin's father,

he could go into business
himself and make a living

to help out Sam, so George
wouldn't have had to carry
the burden of supporting his
country and Sam too.
There is one special serv-
ice of Weizmann that we
should particularly remem-
ber these days. It was Weis.
mann's friendship for Arthur
James Balfour that was a
main force in bringing about
the Balfour Declaration.
It is well known that the
British goverment first of-
fered the then British rd.,-
nial possession of Uganda as
a prospective home for the
i Jews, but Weizmann was
resolutely against it.
Balfour couldn't under-

stand it. "Why do you want
this ofd desolate city of Jeru-
salem?" he asked Weizmann.
"Why do you want Lon-
, don?" asked Weizmann of
Balfour.
"Why, we have had Lon-
don for hundreds of years,"
said Balfour.
"The Jews had Jerusalem
when London was a marsh,"
replied Weizmann.
We can be thankfkul to
Weizmann, reading the
papers today about Uganda,
that Weizmann was around

then.

High Court Rejects
Bid to Keep Chap
at Service Academies

WASHINGTON — The Su-
preme Court has turned down
a government request that it
reinstate compulsory chapel
attendance at the armed
service academies.
A federal appellate court
earlier had said the First
Amendment was violated by
rules requiring cadets at
West Point, Annapolis and
the Air Force Academy to
attend church services. The
Justice Department, seeking
reversal of the appellate
court decision, used previous
Supreme Court decisions on
aid to parochial schools as
guidelines.

3 Students Expelled
for Anti-Semitic Acts

LONDON (JTA)—Two stu-
dents have been expelled per-
manently from York Univer-
sity and one for one year for
anti-Semitic behavior.

A Jewish student com-
plained
that anti-Semitic

songs were sung outside his
room by culprits, who had
also sent him an anti-Semitic
letter.
All three, members of the
extremist right-wing National
Socialist League, claimed
theY had been drunk, but
university authorities did not
accept this as an excuse.
The students have appealed
against their sentence to the
University Council.

From Rags to Riches for Textile Industry

RAMAT GAN — At the
first graduation exercises of
the Shenkar College of Tex-
tile and Fashion Technology
here, Minister of Commerce
and Industry Haim Bar Lev
noted that he hopes to see
the textile industry develop.
After Dr. Alev Lerner, di-
rector of the college, said
that some people call textiles
"the rag industry," the min-
ister told this story:
"Every woman has three
things, a son who's a genius, j
a husband who's something
of a fool and a closet filled
with rags. And, as long as J
women complain that they

have only rags to wear,
they'll continue to buy new

clothing and support the tex-
tile industry."
