The work has added im- portant information to data about the history of the "Upper City" of Jerusalem in the First and Second Temple periods. Seven areas on which building is scheduled to start soon were excavated, from Misgav Ladach Street, in the east, to Ha'ari Street and the Armenian Quarter in the west. Finds at all but one site bear witness to the existence of a settlement on the west- ern hill of Jerusalem, at the end of the period of the Kings. The fact that Jerusalem had spread beyond the walls of the city of David first became clear during previous seasons, when a city wall dating to the 7th Century BCE was found within the Jewish Quarter. As distinct from previous seasons, the last yielded only few finds from the Has- monean period. Noteworthy was a hoard of coins struck by Mattatyahu Antigonus, the last of the Hasmonean kings. Most finds are from the Herodian period — the era of Jerusalem's greatest de- velopment. A number of blocks from large stone col- umns, similar to those un- earthed in the last season, were found near the Hurva Synagogue, confirming the the Jewish Terrorists' Widows Get Aid From Israel JERUSALEM — Several hundred widows of Arab ter- rorists are receiving support money from Israel's social welfare ministry. Welfare Minister Michael Hazani stated in Jerusalem, flazani, who was answer. ing the questions of a visiting group of U.S. Mizrachi wom- en, also said that the minis- try was helping to support the destitute families of ter- rorists serving jail sentences in Israel. assumption that monumental building stood near this now ruined house of prayer. Remains of a residential building were excavated in Misgav Ladach St. This house, the first such of its style to be found in Jeru- salem, was burned and de- stroyed during the Roman conquest of Jerusalem. A feature of particular interest are the remains of a ninter- nal colonnaded courtyard such as was the style of patrician houses in the Hel- lenistic and Roman world, Building foundations and several mosaic floors from the Byzantine period were found during this season.
