If the Association for Welfare of Soldiers in Israel reaches its goal, this is how
the soldiers' house in Eilat will look. The chairman of the Detroit branch of the asso-
ciation, Rabbi A. Irving Schnipper, said many projects in progress and on the drawing
board will require the financial help of friends abroad. He added that every time an
Israeli soldier enters one of these rest houses, he is aware that Jews abroad have given
him a chance to recover from the strain and burdens of Israel's defense. Until there
are adequate facilities throughout Israel, however, many servicemen will have to
endure inadequate rest and line up for recreational activities. The association has set
the goal of completing and expanding several rest camps, clubs and hostels within
the next two years. Locations include Beersheba and Sharm el Sheikh, as well as
Natanya, Haifa and Givat Olga. For information on membership in the association.

Swiss Receives Heine Prize

BONN (JTA)—The Hein-
rich Heine Prize was award-
ed_ to Swiss author Carl
Zuckmayer.
The award, presented by
Federal President Gustav
Heinemann, concluded the
year-long celebrations which
marked the 175th anniver-
sary of the Jewish poet's
birth.
Zuckmayer,
a
novelist
mainly known for his book
"Captain From Kopenick,"
was one of the most out-
spoken critics of Hitler's
regime. Born of a Catholic
father and a Jewish mother.
he emigrated in the '30s to
America.
After the war, he settled

in Switzerland and now has
Swiss nationality.

Zuckmayer, a close per-
sonal friend of Heinemann,
could not attend the cere-
mony due to illness. The
ceremony took place in Dus-
seldorf where the Heinrich
Heine Society has renewed
its seven-year campaign to

claiming that Dusseldorf is a
scientific university and
Heine was not a scientist.
In his presentation speech,
Heinemann charged that
those who refused to rename

Dusseldorf University had
"reasons which they did not
care to admit."
The Heine anniversary was

marked in West and East

Germany, London, where he
lived for several years, and
in Paris where he lived and
died on Feb. 17, 1856.
