Egypt Would Lose War,
Cairo Report Discloses

BRUSSELS—An Egyptian
army and air force top secret
study has convinced top mili-
tary men in Cairo that their
country would lose to Israel
in another war, diplomatic
sources said here.
The sources said the sur-
vey reports only 60 to 65 per
cent of the air force's war-
planes ready to fly, and 40
per cent of the army's wea-
pons ready to use.
The Egyptian military is
less worried about the losses
in the fighting with Israel
than that their air force
squandered at least 50 planes
in training accidents since
1970, the sources said.
The survey also disclosed
that Egypt has lost about
100. fighters and bombers in

the "war of attrition" with
Israel since late 1969 until

August 1970, and in training
since then.
The sources said the survey
blames the lack of military
readiness on bad mainten-
ance, careless handling by
Egyptian troops and a lack
of spare parts from Russia,
which has supplied most of
the arms.
The survey reportedly said
40 per cent of the Egyptian

army's weapons are effective,
40 per cent are irrepairable,
and 20 per cent are usable if
spare parts arrive.
Russia is reportedly taking
a lot of time to fulfill a prom-
ise that supplies, suspended
when Egypt expelled Soviet
advisors in July, will be re-
sumed.
The loss of 100 of Egypt's
war planes—most of which
are Soviet made—since 1969
meant about one-fifth of the
