.•eacher Strike Looms in Israel

TEL AVIV (JTA)—Israel's
teachers union announced
that it would stage a one-
day strike Dec. 28 in support
of demands for higher wages
and would consider further
strike action if their demands
are not met.
The union rejected an ap-
peal by Finance Minister
Pinhas Sapir, who met with
the union heads over the
weekend an d
reportedly
agreed in principle that the
teachers deserved higher
wages but said they were
asking too much at this time.
El Al maintenance crews
ended their undeclared work
slowdown Tuesday under
pressure of management and

Histadrut threats to take
severe action against the
slowdown leaders.
But some observers said it
was not certain that the re-
turn to normal operations
was permanent.
The rulebook slowdown
which delayed El Al depart-
ures was never officially ac-
knowledged by the mainte-
nance workers, and they were
able tb return to their normal
schedules without loss of
face.
By the same token, they
could revert to the slowdown
at any time, one source said.
Ashkelon, Israel's principal
tanker port, was strikebound
as 70 workers demanded a
pay hike. The strike par-
alyzed the port as well as
the oil pipeline used by
tankers to load or discharge
oil offshore.
Communications techn
cians who ended a week-
long wildcat strike last week,
repaired damaged equipment
at telephone exchanges as
newspapers denounced the
strike.
