All this and much more
happened in those 10 days
when the Fuehrer saw his
Third Reich collapse about
him. His on c e victorious

his air force destroyed, and
his link with the outside
world was reduced to radio
communications.
Hitler ranted and raved
like a caged animal; yet, he
still was obeyed by his gen-
erals and by the SS elite
guard and maintained the
fierce power to bring death
with one nod.
The Hitler of 1945 was no
longer the conquerer of Eur-
ope. The attempt to assass-
inate him had left him with
a dragging leg and a trem-
bling left hand,
Wolfgang Reinhardt, oldest
son of the world-renowned
showman M a x Reinhardt,
asked me to come to his
apartment in Chelsea for my
Interview. A screen - writer
who had worked for la years
In Hollywood, Reinhardt was
Inspired to do the Hitler pic-
ture after reading Hugh
Trevor-Roper's account of the
II days. More recently, Rein-
hardt bad studied the eye-
witness report of Gerhardt
Boldt, a 26-year-old much-
decorated Wehnnacht we
v t
eran, who was In the Fueb•
rer's bunker as adjutant to
Gen. Krebs.
Reinhardt started to anal-
yze the personality of Hitler
and discovered that this awe-
so m e , powerful man was
quite mediocre, a clown with
a Chaplin mustache whom at
f i r s t no one but his few
disciples took seriously.
There are no orotund sayings
to survive Hitler.
Reinhardt feels t h a t he
knew how to a rouse his
people, but that what he said
in his uniquely flamboyant
style and hoarse voice made
no "c o m m on sense" but
"common nonsense."
"I personally consider Hit-
ler one of the most overrated
characters in history," said
Reinhardt, pointing to the
fuehrer's philosophical ram-
blings that have been pre-
served word-for-word. Our
film shows him as he was in
reality, a low-grade bour-
geois with killer instinct."
Photographed in the Shep-1
perton Studios, where "The
Guns of Navarone" was made!
12 years ago, "The Last 10
Days" required only one set,
the key bunker spread over
the huge "C" stage in a faith-
ful reproduction of the or-
iginal, which was made of
steel-reinforced concrete and
— in two floors — reached
50 feet below the surface.
Reinhardt told on the news-
papers labeled her "mad and
callous" for having disgraced
the past.
