Peace of Advice With Teeth in It

A contributor to Abigail
Van Buren's advice column
consoled an earlier writer
with the following words re-
cently:
"Dear Abby: Let AFRAID
OF DOGS try this: If a dog
approaches in a menacing
manner, say 'Shalom' in a
firm but cordial way. Keep
repeating it until the dog
retreats and stops barking.
"I tried this once, by ac-
cident, and it worked, so now
I do it every time a dog
looks like it is going to at-
tack me. As many as three
barking dogs have come to-
ward me at once, and I kept
repeating 'Shalom, Shalom,'
and thank goodness, it's al-

ways worked.
'Shalom in Louisville"
Abby responded: "Dear
Shalom: Those dogs must
have boned up on their He-
brew."
