Jews in Chile Face Crisis, Uncertain Future

who, until last year, was
president of the Grand Lodge
of the 20th District which

Semitic actions directed by
embassies or representatives
of the Arab League, al-
though everything is care-
fully disguised under the
subtle flag of anti-Zionism.
S o m e publications or ex-
cerpts that appear in the
newspapers show this line of
thought, and many of them
need to be answered by the
representative committee ad-
dressing their replies to pub-
lic opinion.
Two things that happened
recently point out this trend,
despite the government's ef-
forts to appease all con-
cerned and to reduce the
natural - uneasiness of the
Jewish communities. One of
the events was the recent
fourth National Congress of
Chileans of Arab Origin and
the Arab Residents which
took place in Valparaiso and
Vina del Mar. The proceed-
ings were transmitted by
radio and were attended by
ambassadors of Egypt, Syria
and Algeria, plus the mayor
of Valparaiso and the con-
gressmen belonging to the
government's party.
As might have been ex-
pected, the congress started
and ended with violent at-
tacks on Israel and the "Zion-
ist imperialism." The official
party's congressman, Ani-
ceto Rodriguez said: "Until
not long ago, Chile forgot
Arab interests. International
hypocrisy made us play a
bad role in the United Na•
Lions. Fortunately, this has
been corrected by the new
government of the Unidad
Popular which, for the first
time, is supporting the cause
of the Arab countries." Ser-
gio Vuskovic Rojo, mayor
of Valparaiso, said: "Just as
we feel badly as Chileans
about the presence of North
American troops in Cam•
bodia and Vietnam, it hurts
us too to see Israeli troops
in Arab territories, and in
the name of the Chilean
government, I affirm the po-
sition of the government of
Chile and President Allende
on the side of the Arab
people in any contingency."
Syrian Ambassador Bour-
han Kayal said: "The truth
behind the Zionism is not a
secret any more because the
world public opinion knows
perfectly well the goals they
aim at, endeavoring to ex-
pand at the expense of the
Xrab people, of trying to
make of occupied Palestine
a base for Zionism and im-
perialism aimed at drowning
the Arab liberation move-
ment and leave the Arab
world divided forever."
The acceptance of the Arab
League by Chile's govern-
ment and the establishment
of an office for Latin Amer-
ica in Santiago is a source
of concern to the Jewish com-
munity. Gil Sinay and Robert
Levy, community represent-
atives, met the undersecre-
tary of foreign affairs and
the minister of interior. As
a result, the minister stated
in a letter: " . . the char-
acteristics of t h e Chilean
people will not tolerate ac-
tivities contrary to the pat-
terns of pacific coexistence
that are traditional in Chile."
This is the way that Chile
and its Jews look in 1972.
Maybe in April 1973, when
narliamentary elections are
held, the situation will
change. At the moment,
30,000 Jews in Chile live in a
very different situation than
their brothers in the same
continent. The future? There
are no prophets in our times.
