'Mary's Well' Source THE DETROIT JEWISH HEWS

Reportedly Found
Near NazarethChurch

NAZARETH — The under-
ground source feeding
"Mary's Well," near the
Greek Orthodox Church in
the center of Nazareth has
been uncovered.
Fuad Faran, chairman of
the Greek Orthodox Com-
munity Council and an engi-
neer, said that the discovery
was made by accident, as
workers searched for sources
of pollution of the well's
water.
Some 33 yards north of the
religious site the workmen
had found a large cave. It
contained at least three sep-
arate wells and various parts
of the town in ancient times.
The discovery of the source
caused a stir in town, espe-
cially among the Christian
residents. According to Greek
Orthodox tradition. the Vir-
gin Mary used to draw water
from the well every day, as
it was the only one in the
city at the time. During one
of her visits to this wt11,
Christians believe, the Angel
Gabriel appeared to her and
made the Annunciation.
