Tribute to Cohn Draws 850 Well-Wishers

More than 850 attended the
National Bnai Brith Humani-
tarian Award Dinner honor-
ing Irwin I. Cohn for half a
century of leadership in civic;
communal and philanthropic
activities.
Jack J. Spitzer. national
chairman of the Bnai Brith
Foundation of the United
States, presented the award
to Cohn, "for distinguished
and enduring contributions of
a humanitarian nature" at
the dinner Wednesday night
at Cobo Hall.
Spitzer pointed out that
among his many benefactors.
Cahn had donated a chapel
to the Hillel Foundation at
the University of Michigan
and the Hillel wing at Wayne
State University Hillel.

Elaine Lewis of the Michi-
gan Metaphysical Society
will present an audience par-

lodge will hold its annual
Christmas party 1:30 p.m.
Dec. 17 for 300 children at
the Wayne County Child
Development Center in
Northville. Surprise packages
will be presented to each
child and prizes will be
awarded to children partici-

Jacob Barkin of Cong. Shaar-
ey Zedek, guest artist, offi-
ciated at the lighting of the
Hanuka menora.

Cohn and his wife Sadie, who
will accompany him on a
visit to Israel next week.
There, they will meet an
uncle, aunt and their family,
who immigrated from Russia
two months ago.
There were greetings from
U.S. Senators Philip A. Hart
and Robert Griffin, from Gov.
William G. Milliken and
Michigan Secretary of State
Richard Austin and a procla-
mation from the State Legis-
lature. introduced by State
Sen. Jack Faxon.
Austin paid tribute to Cohn
for his efforts on behalf of
Blacks and Jews and empha-
sized the common bond be-
tween both peoples "who
must unite now to face the
perilous days ahead." Cohn
is former president of the
Detroit Urban League, which
also presented him with an
a ward.
One note of levity was Fax-
on's reading of the legislative
resolution in Yiddish. For the
benefit of the many Gentiles
in the audience—as well as
non-Yiddish speaking Jews—
he then read the resolution
in English.
Mayor Roman S. Gribbs of
Detroit proclaimed Dec. 6
"Irwin I. Cohn Day" in De-
troit, and Mayor Norman W.
Feder proclaimed a similar
day in Southfield. The Detroit
Common Council passed a
resolution commending Cohn.
Mandell L. Berman, presi-
dent of the Jewish Welfare
Federation, paid tribute to
Cohn, and the Very Rev. Mal-

Prof. Horace M. Kallen,
the philosopher who success-
fully challenged the "melting
pot" theory with his con-
cepts of an American society
built on "cultural pluralism,"
was honored by Bnai Brith
Thursday for his "lifetime of
creative contributions to Jew-
ish thought." The 90-year-old
scholar and educator received
the second annual Harold M.
Weisberg Memorial Award
at a dinner at the New
School in Manhattan, where
Dr. Kallen taught for 51
years. The presentation in-
cludes a $1,500 cash gift for
the support of the Horace M.
Kallen Chair in American
Philosophy which the New
School established last year.
Dr. Kallen joined the New
School faculty at its found-
ing in 1919. He retired from
active teaching at age 87.
