"The World of Anatole
Kaplan", an exhibition in-
cluding the complete series
of lithographs based on Sho-
lem Aleichem's "Tevya The
Milkman", plus The Song of
Songs, "The Little Goat" and
"The Bewitched Tailor," will
open 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Dae-
dalus I gallery, Birmingham.
Twenty-two of the litho-
graphs were completed in
1957 in preparation for the
1959 centenary of Sholem
Aleichem's birth, and the fi-
nal 17 were completed in
1963. Both portions of the
series were produced in Len-
ingrad.
The famous Russian writer
Ilya Ehrenburg said of the
Tevya lithograph series in
his introduction:

"Anatole Kaplan is an ar-
tist. Ile does not explain, he
creates his images arisen
-both from the poetry of his
favorite books and from the
visual sensation of the world.
I know his lithographs cre-
ated from the stories by Sho-
lem Aleichem. They are sad
and poetic. The love of the
youth of wisdom of the old
age, the tales of old villages
like Kasrilovka, disappeared
long ago, are seen in these
lithographs. They may in-
deed be born by the stories
of a great writer, but they
live their own independent
life. It is not a supplement to
a book, it is a wonderful
work of fine art where the
black and white colors are
used so vividly that it creates
an impression -of a full color
scale.
"Looking at the lithographs
Kaplan. I am reminded
of the works of other artists
whom one can call his coun-
trymen: Kaplan is born in
Rogachev, Mark Chagali is
born in Vitebsk. Soutine was
born in Smilovichy. Not only
the memories of wooden
shanties, of shop-signs, of
bearded elders and dreamy,
youngsters unite them, but
also the sensation of the
fairyness, of the tragedy oust
at the same time a passionate
love for life. All this is ex-
pressed not in a literary par-
aphrase, but in the language
of art.' •
