"The Jew is today desper-
ately needed as a Jew by the
Jewish people. I dare say
that it is only as a Jew, con-
sciously reflecting the values
and ways of authentic Jewish
life, that he is also desper-
ately needed by the world.
Since the dangers confront-
ing the Jewish people in their
struggle to assure physical
and spiritual survival must
not he underestimated, it is
essential that more of Jew-
ish intellect, energy, skill and
sacrificial idealism be redi-
rected toward the strengthen-
ing of what is authentically
Jewish."

RABBI HAYI-M H.

The synagogue, the festi-
vals, the daily life of the Jew,
from birth to death and in-
between, are thoroughly ana-
lyzed and defined.
The accompanying Hebrew
prayers and excerpts from
rituals add significantly to
the value of this explanatory
work.
An epilogue on "The Mean-
ing of Return," on teshuva
and baal-teshuva, is an addi-
tional portion of the rabbinic
commentary.
Rabbi Donin has certainly
enriched the literary Jewish
field and the spiritual eval-
uative with a guide of merit
to a better knowledge of
Jewish terminologies and the
meanings of the daily and
festive Jewish practices.

Then come the explanatory
chapters for the Sabbath--in
itself a very valuable section
defining the day of rest and
the spiritual and leisure du-
ties and benefits. It is a
scholarly treatment of one of
the most important aspects
of Jewish life.

In his section on "Family
Life." which he defines as
"A Key to Happiness," Rabbi
Donin is especially effective. I
It is a timely discourse in
which he explains sexual dis-
cipline in marriage, abortion
and birth control. He explains
the religious tradition which
"encourages having many
children" and he sees no ob-
jection to "planned parent-
hood or spacing of birth." He
also states: - Contemporary
rabbinic authority has ex-
pressed no objection to the
use of 'the since it does
not appear to violate the in-

junction against 'the destruc-
tion of the seed.' "
On the question of abortion.
he states that - While a fetus
is not regarded as a living
soul until birth, it does have
a status of potential life, the
destruction of which is a ser-
ious offense." In the event of
dangers to life, he indicates
that there are "permissive
rulings for abortion before
the 40th day."

With this approach as a
basis he guides the reader
through the forms of daily
Jewish life, the ethical codes
to be applied in relation to
fellow men, in -business deal-
ings, treatment of animals,
in meting out justice.

The accomplishment can
be anticipated because the
guidance provided in this
volume is, definitely, authen-
ticated. Dr. Donin's approach
is factual. He defines reason-
ing for the Commandments,
and offers the background
for his subject -matter by
tracing the cornerstones of
Judaism. In the process he
describes the role of Israel,
the Land of Israel, the God
of Israel.
