The Best of Everything

FOR ANYTHING FROM a
rnouth•watering corned beef
sandwich to a jereboam of
the finest champagne, Al.
ban's Bottle and Basket in
Birmingham has it . . ,
This unique spot on Ilunter
Blvd., near Maple Rd., is a
most interesting place for a
visit . . . even complete
Sunday dinners, $1.99 . . .
Whether you arc planning a
party, shopping for the per-
son who has everything, or
feeling Just plain hungry, you
will find what you are look-
ing for at Alban's Bottle and
Basket . . . It started out as
a grocery store in 1951 and
gradually added items of dis-
tinction . . Today it con-
-itains almost everything you
rleould hope for in quality
food, liquid goodies, excel-
lent cigars And tobaccos and
unusual gifts . . .

.

. . Customers walk through
this barrel, lined on each
side with fine wines, to get
from one part of the store
to the other . . Another
clever touch in the dining
Mom is a huge wagon wheel
mounted horizontally and
converted into a large table
seating seven persons . .

As for the food — well —
be prepared to admit that
your eyes are bigger than
your stomach . . , Every.
thing looks so good behind
the glass counter which
separates you from the
friendly guys 'n gals waiting
on you that you simply feel
the need to try it all . . .
You have a choice of about
100 different kinds of salads,
delicious sandwiches and
many choices of hot meals
. . . As you walk past the
counter, your eye is caught
by a large display of breads
— every kind you can think
of ... If you are not hungry
and are simply in Alban's
Bottle and Basket to buy
some spirits, you still have
a hard choice to make, since
they have stocked almost all
varieties of domestic and
imported wines, beers and
liquors . . .

As Betty' Goldberg herself
says, "Everything is for sale
except the help" . . This
inclodes some very ingenious
decorations . . . One that
would be quite hard to take
home is the huge hogshead
which forms the companion-
way between the food and
restaurant 'department and
he liquor and wine section

The management also says
that if they don't have what
you want, they will order it
for you . . . The fine selec-
tion of potables was amassed
by filling all requests . .
parking is no problem . . .

EVER HEAR of a party
for a drink' .
Well, Betty
and Don Cohen are having
one this Sunday in the hopes
of coming up with a per-
manent name for their happy
concoction . . recipe per
drink: 2 oz. light rum, 1 oz .
brandy, I a oz. gin, I oz.
creme de almond, 2 oz.
orange juice and 1 oz. lemon
juice . . . stir only (do not
blend) and serve over ice
cubes . . . As of late, the
Cohens, now Southfield resi-
dents from Rochester, N. Y.
have been using names per
holidays . . . such as
"Witches Brew" on Hal-
loween, "Lovers' Potion" on
Valentine's Day, "Kickapoo
Joy Juice" on Sadie Hawkins
Day and "Hawaiian Punch"
for the luaus they like to
give . . . There's a prize to
the one who comes up with
a name for Hanuka, says
Don.
