He said Rabbi Goren threat
ened to "cut off all contact' .
with him and refuse to par.

ceremony unless he agreed
to adjudicate the Langer
case in the manner proposed
by Goren.
Rabbi Goren has denied
that there was an ultimatum,
but Rabbi Yosef repeated
the charge in an interview

"Huck Finn" in you.

Goren. who has pledged
that one of his first tasks as
chief rabbi would be to
settle the Langer Case,
which has aroused bitter
feelings in Israel against the
religious establishment.
wants Rabbi Yosef to join
him and one other rabbinical
judge on a special three-man

Rabbi Yosef insists that
the case be heard by a regu-

neither chief rabbi partici-

of appeal to the rabbinical
supreme court on which both
chief rabbis sit.

In what was viewed as a'
demonstrative gesture. Rabbi
Yosef sat in judgment with
the rabbinical supreme court
his .week for the first time
-ince his election.

Rabbi Goren's efforts to
find a halakhic solution to
the case ran into a snag this
week when the Langers'
mother's first husband ap-
plied to a rabbinical court
in Petah Tikva to confirm
his status as a Jew. The
taint of bastardy was applied
to the Langer children be-
cause, according to the
rabbis., their mother was not
properly divorced from her
first husband, Abraham for.
okovsky, and hence the chil-
dren of her second marriage
were conceived in adultery.
Borokovsky married the
present Mrs. Langer in Po-
hnd after World War II.
Goren's case rests on the
argument that Borokovsky
was not properly converted
to Judaism and therefore his
marriage to the Langers'
mother was never valid.
Borokovsky applied to the
same rabbinical court that
originally declared the Lan-
ger children bastards and
banned their marriage.
He claims that since his
conversion in Poland he has
been thought of as a Jew and
acted like one. He said press
reports that Rabbi Goren
sought to cancel the validity
of his
... conversion have
caused him great personal
distress.

If you tell the truth, you
have- to remember any-
thing.—Mark Twain.
