Dr. Orlinsky; Sen. Church Backs Present
What a Manl Israel Boundaries, Opposes

U.S. Illusions, UN Anomaly

One of the wittiest men in
the world is Dr. Harry Or-
husky.
One of the brainiest men in
the world is this same Dr.
Orlinsky.
Dr. Orlinsky is also one of
the most eloquent of speak-
ers, as many of you who have
heard him know.
In the event you have not
yet learned about Dr. Orlin-
sky, be advised that he is
the professor of Bible at the
Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion.
He is the chairman of that
august committee which is
giving us the Bible in a new
contemporary English ver-
sion.
This is being done under
the auspices of the Jewish
Publication Society. The com-
mittee has already produced
the first five books of Moses,
the five Megillot, and soon
we will have its Isaiah.
Dr Orlinsky also made his-
tory when he was the only
Jewish savant on the com-
mittee which produced the
updated English version of
Scriptures fashioned by the
world of Protestantism. It's
called the Revised Standard
Version.
As a lecturer, Dr. Orlinsky
is a side-splitter. And also
a mind-stretcher. He told a
group of Christian clergymen
recently about his entrance
into Bible study. It was at
the University of Toronto and
the speaker said he took his
first Bible class not ao much
because he was interested in
the subject but because be
was interested in billiards
and had to take a morning
course so he would get to a
choice table in the morning.,
His anecdotal style is rib-
splitting. Then be goes into
his subject and few men in
the world know more about
the Bible than this man,
whose books are fascinating,
whose classroom lectures are
intriguing and whose know-
ledge is seemingly limitless.
For instance, take this one
sentence from his talk: "St.
Jerome, who translated the
Bible into Latin to produce
what is known as the Vul-
gate, left us notes about the
Bible which give us more in-
sight into Holy Writ than any
Jewish sources."
Orlinsky audiences are
spellbound. From the pulpit
he gives a talk on how the
Queen of Sheba came to visit
King Solomon which is re-
plete with wit and informa-
tion galore.
This is a lucky country to
have in it Dr. Orlinsky. Tor-
onto, where he lived as a
youngster, and Baltimore,
where he flourished for many
Years, and New York, where
he now teaches, are especial-
ly fortunate.

Israel Hotels Seek
American Knowhow

JERUSALEM — Israel's
hotels are trying to solve
their acute shortage of
trained help by mechaniza-
tion. Tourist Ministry Direc-
tor-General Hanoch Givton
said that Israel was looking
to America for advice on de-
veloping facilities for mass,
low-priced tourism.
A group of American tour-
ist officials reported here
that specific projects already
were being discussed, includ-

WASHINGTON — Senator
Frank Church said that If
peace is to come to the
Middle East, "it must be
based on the acceptance of
the fact that Israel won the
Six-Day War."
Church, a senior member
of the Senate Foreign Rela-
tions Committee, made the
assessment in a report to the
committee on his fact-finding
mission to Israel Aug. 22-27.
In a major break with ad-
ministration policy, Church
charged that "the Rogers
plan keeps alive the hopes

SEN. FRANK CHURCH

of the Arab world that the
results of the war can some-
how be set aside. It cannot
be done, and U. S. policy
should not continue to foster
such illusions.
"As long as U. S. policy
holds out the hope that the
United Nations or outside
powers can induce Israel to
sacrifice what she considers
to be her vital interests,
namely, secure borders, the
Arab nations will refuse to

face up to the realities of the
situation."
Noting that Israel's re-
quirement for a peace settle-
ment can be summed up in
four words, "secure and
recognized boundaries," the
Idaho senator said:
"It is an illusion that the
clock can be turned back and
Israel made to accept former
boundaries which, in her
view, offer insufficient secur-
ity. The Arabs cannot regain
at the bargaining table what
they could not hold on the
battlefield. And, with the
withdrawal of the Soviet
forces from Egypt, no great
power is prepared to lend
its military might to forcing
Israel to retreat to her 1967
frontiers.
"Nor," Church continued,
"does the United Nations
possess the means to enforce
the Security Council resolu-
tion."
Commenting on the UN
demand for a restoration of
the pre - war boundaries,
Church said, "A double
standard seems to apply, one
to the Middle East and an-
other to the rest of the
world. This is not to say that
territorial expansion by force
can be justified under the
UN Charter. The hard fact
remains, however, that bor-
ders are normally shifted
after wars to reflect results
on the battlefield. The effort
to induce Israel to withdraw
to her pre-war borders is an
anomaly. For a second time
under the auspices of the
United Nations, the attempt
is being made to erase the
results of a victorious war."

has denied that it is anti-
Semitic.
The editorial disclaimer
appeared following publica-
tion in the Tribune of an at-
tack on Zionism by Bill
Mathis, chairman and di-
rector of Philadelphia CORE
since 1965 and co-chairman
of the Congress of African
People.
The article was one of a
series by Mathis on Black
Nationalism. The Tribune
subsequently published a
refutation of Mathis' allega-
tions from the Jewish Com-
munity Relations Council of
Greater Philadelphia.
Mathis' article alleged a
Zionist "conspiracy" which
deprived the Arab peoples
of their land in Palestine,
charged that Israel was
aligned with nations that op-
press Blacks and claimed
that black ghetto dwellers
were oppressed for decades
by Jewish businessmen.
The Tribune's lead editor-
ial which followed the Mathis
article said, "Tbe Tribune
is definitely not anti-Semitic
and does not relish being s•
categorized when an item
not complimentary to the
Jewish peopis ascribed to
the author is carried in its
news columns. The infre-
quency of such articles at-
tests to this."
Describing its "friendly re-
lationship with the Jewish
community," the editorial
added that "B ecause the

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

LONDON (JTA) — The
recent upsurge in attacks on
Israel and Zionism in the
Soviet "goVertuttent news-
papers is reflected in the
latest edition of Sovietish
Helmand, the USSR's offi-
cial Jewish periodical.
The issue opens with a
poem by the editor, Aaron
Vergelis, which depicts Rus-
sian Jews who have gone to
Israel, begging the Soviet
ambassador in Vienna for
permission to return to the
Soviet Union. In the poem
the Jews say "We are re-
turnees. We had risked
everything. We are coming
back from Israel, from Ash-
dod and Beersheba. We were
cheated out of Kishinev and
sent to those places. We
were promised a good life,
abundance and justice. We
were given nothing in Is-
rael."
The issue also contains an
article by Gen. David Drag-
unsky, highest ranking Jew-
ish of ficer in the Soviet
armed forces, denying re-
ports that he said appeared
in Western and Israeli news-
papers that he was trying to
go to Israel.

threatened to resign if the
two Yeshiva students con-
victed of arson of a sex bou-
tique in Tel Aviv are not set
free.
This informtion triggered a
heated debate between ortho-
dox and secular portions of
the public.
The controversy reached its
peak when Jerusalem Mayor
Teddy Kollek got involved in
a heated exchange with his
deputy mayor, Menachem
Porush, a traditionalist mem-
ber of the Aguda.
It is alleged that Teddy
Kollek said to Porush that
the president had no right to
intervene on behalf of the
arsonists and that the presi-
dent is "all mixed up and
ought to resign."
Mayor Kollek, in a letter to
Shazar, denied that he made
such a statement. But Porush
insisted that Kollew did in-
sult the head of state.
The two students have been
sentenced to 18 months' im-
prisonment. In Orthodox cir-
cles, it is believed, however,

Jewish Studies List
for High Schools

The American Association
for Jewish Education in New
York and the Educational
Research Council of America
in Cleveland have published
a three-part bibliography to
meet the needs of students
and teachers in Jewish
studies programs in public
secondary schools.
Dr. Hyman Chanover, di-
rector of the National Cur-
riculum Research Institute of

tory, Religion and Culture,"

Police Efforts
`Disarm' Bandits

JERUSALEM (J T A) —
The sound of coins jingling
in the round metal tray at
the bottom of the "one-armed
bandit" will soon be silent
in this city. The smiles, or
frowns, depending on how
the configuration of symbols
line up on the cylinder after
the hand is pulled forward,
will no longer appear on ti‘
faces of the players.
Jerusalem police have be-
gun ■ drive against slot ma-
chines in both the western
and eastern quarters of the
city.
A spokesman for the Jeru-
salem police department
said police had shut down
five slot machine parlors,
destroying 12 slot machines
and arresting 20 persons.
