Isaac Litwak Retires at 80; Union's
Dinner Sunday to Honor Its Leader
for Devotion to Workers, Community

Isaac Litwak, one of the
most active of Michigan's
labor leaders whose name has
been linked for many years
with work for Israel and the
Histadrut labor movement,
will be honored on his 80th
birthday at a dinner Sunday
that is already a sellout.
The event, sponsored by
Teamster Local 285 of Laun-
dry and Linen Drivers Union,
to be held on Sunday at the
Latin Quarter, also marks
Litwak's retirement from the
presidency of this union
local.
Throughout his many years
of service to the union, Lit-
wak earned the reputation
for honesty of belief, sin-
cerity of conviction and fear-
lessness in championing his
workers' causes.
Year after year he has lent
his support to the Israel His-
tadrut Campaign and other
recognized Jewish and non-
Jewish charities, notably the
Allied, Jewish Campaig n,
United Foundation and Israel
Bonds. He has served as a
member of the national board
of directors of the Israel His-
tadrut Campaign and he has
participated actively when-
ever Histadrut called on the
labor movement to lend to its
support.
The dinner Sunday will
be addressed by James R.
Hoffa, former president of the
International Brotherhood of
Teamsters, and Litwak will
be presented with a Histadrut
citation by Gregory J. Bar.
dacke, executive director of
the American Trade Union
Council, who will be in Detroit
for this important occasion.
Litwak at 80 is a living
legend among teamsters. For
37 years he gave his
life to the teamster move-
ment, creating and maintain-
ing Local 285, "a fiery little
man with a giant vision and
a personal crusade to make
a teamster laundry driver's
life better, ha ppier and
surer," as a co-worker de-
scribed him.

after a slipped disc in his
back forced Litwak into re-
tirement, observed that the
laundry industry found Lit-
wak an "extremely tough
man to bargain with as far
as the positions he took In
representing his member-
ship."
Litwak is a born revolu-
tionist. He was born in
Czarist Russia. He emigrated
