Kahane Can't Leave Israel Now,
Supreme Court Rules' on Appeal

JERUSALEM (JTA) —The appeared recently in Playboy
Supreme Court Sunday over- magazine. At first, he said
ruled a Tel Aviv district he saw the role of the Jewish
court's order that would have Defense League in New York
permitted Rabbi Meir Ka- as a protective arm against
hane, leader of the Jewish the threat of hooliganism by
Defense League, to leave the Blacks. Later he turned his

nection with JDL arms
smuggling attempts.

Rabbi Kahane's passport
was confiscated when he was
remanded in custody last
month. A magistrate's court
released him on IL 40,000
bail 10 days ago but did not
return his passport.
The district court to which
the JDL leader appealed
suhsequently or de red his
passport returned and per-
mitted him to go abroad for
one month provided he did
not go to the United States.
The decision was chal-
lenged by the state's attor-
ney whose appeal to the Su-
preme Court was upheld Sun-
day by Justice Haim Cohen.
A decision on whether to
bring charges against Rabbi
Kahane was expected this
week.
The JDL leader, address-
ing students at Bar-Ilan Uni-
versity last Saturday night,
said the JDL would run as a
political party in next year's
Knesset elections because its
aim was to defend the char-
acter and image of Jews.
The spokesman of the Ju-
dea and Samaria Military
Government said earlier that
Kahane may visit Hebron
on a one-time basis, on con-
dition the visit is for pur-
poses of prayer.
The spokesman said the or-
der issued by the military
governor banning Rabbi Ka-
hane and his followers from
visiting Hebron was aimed at
preventing the JDL from
carrying out its intention
of publicly "confronting" the
mayor, Sheikh Mohammed
Ali Ja'abari, in connection
with his alleged role in tie
1929 Hebron riots.

that the JDI, had organized a
