Inter- ment Tel Aviv. Dr. Zevi Scharfstein, Hebrew Educator NEW YORK - Dr. Zevi Scharfstein, a longtime He- brew educator, died Oct. 11. He was 88. Scharfstein started Dr. teaching in Poland and Aus- tria and continued in the United States. He joined the faculty of the Teachers In- stitute of New York in 1915 and retired in 1957. His only academic degree was an honorary doctor of Hebrew letters, awarded by the Jew- ish Theological Seminary. Dr. Scharfstein wrote more than 100 textbooks for chil- dren. He founded Shilo, a He- brew publishing firm, which he headed until 1968, and Shvili Ha Chinuch, a Hebrew educational journal. Many of his works are considered classics in Hebrew schools throughout the world. A son, Dr. Ben-Amt Scharf- stein, is head of the depart- ment of philosophy at Tel Aviv University. 'Blanche Lesser, 73 Blanche Lesser, an acti;e member of Pioneer Women and other organizations, died Monday at age 73.
