He is survived by his wife,
Estelle (Trubow); a son,
Joel; a daughter, Gail; his
father, Sol; and a brother,
Frank, and a sister, Mrs.
Seymour (Mildred) Rabino-
witz, both of Detroit. Inter-
ment Tel Aviv.
Dr. Zevi Scharfstein,
Hebrew Educator
NEW YORK - Dr. Zevi
Scharfstein, a longtime He-
brew educator, died Oct. 11.
He was 88.
Scharfstein started
Dr.
teaching in Poland and Aus-
tria and continued in the
United States. He joined the
faculty of the Teachers In-
stitute of New York in 1915
and retired in 1957. His only
academic degree was an
honorary doctor of Hebrew
letters, awarded by the Jew-
ish Theological Seminary.
Dr. Scharfstein wrote more
than 100 textbooks for chil-
dren. He founded Shilo, a He-
brew publishing firm, which
he headed until 1968, and
Shvili Ha Chinuch, a Hebrew
educational journal. Many of
his works are considered
classics in Hebrew schools
throughout the world.
A son, Dr. Ben-Amt Scharf-
stein, is head of the depart-
ment of philosophy at Tel
Aviv University.
'Blanche Lesser, 73
Blanche Lesser, an acti;e
member of Pioneer Women
and other organizations, died
Monday at age 73.
Mrs. Lesser. 20181 Ard-
more, was publicity chair-
man of Kinneret Chapter,
Pioneer Women, and also be-
longed to Sholem Aleichem
Institute and the Chechon-
over Society. Born in Poland,
she lived in Detroit for 55
years.
Survivors are her husband,
Morris; a daughter. Mrs.
Ted (Dee) Sennett of Home-
wood, Ill.; two brothers,
David Levy of Miami Beach
and Morris Levy; a sister,
Mrs. Anna Goldstein; and six
grandchildren.

TEL AVIV-Joseph Kamin-
ski, composer, concertmaster
and first violinist of the Is-
rael Philharmonic Orchestra,
died here Oct. 13. He was 68.
The Russian-born musician
had been concertmaster of
the Warsaw State Radio Or-
chestra before his immigra-
tion to Israel in 1935. He was
the brother of Yiddish stage
actress Ida Kaminska, who
starred - in the film "The
House on Main Street."
Kaminski had been award-
ed several prizes for his com-
positions and was founder of
the Kaminski String Quartet.
Ile retired from the Philhar-
monic three years ago.

Victims of Holocaust
LONDON (JTA) - John
Cardinal Krol of Philadel-
phia laid a wreath on a tab-
let honoring the Jewish dead
at Auschwitz and Birkenau
death camps.
The American cardinal.
who was born in Poland and
left there on the eve of the
Nazi invasion in 1939, visited
the Auschwitz-Birkenau com-
plex Sunday to pay homage
to a Polish martyr, Rev.
Maximilian Kolbe, a Fran-
ciscan who stepped forward
one day in 1941 to take the
place of a Polish soldier who
had been selected at ran-
dom by a Nazi guard to be
executed.
A crowd estimated at be-
tween 150,000 and 300,000
gathered at the death camp
site on the occasion..
Jordan May Rebuild
the Allenby Bridge
JERUSALEM - Jordan is
considering rebuilding the
Allenby and Damya bridges
over the Jordon River which
were replaced by Bailey
spans after their destruction
during the Six-Day War. The
bridges connect Jordan with
the West Bank.
