brilliant Torah scholar whose
knowledge, ingenuity an d
persistence enables him to
interpret religious law in a
manner that can be recon-
ciled with the needs of a
modern society without alter-
ing the law's letter or spirit.
He came to Palestine
with his family in 1928,
joined the Hagana, served as
a supernumary policeman in
the defense of Jerusalem in
1948 and earned the reputa-
tion of an excellent marks-
man. He found time to study
the classics and philosophy
at the Hebrew University
where he earned prizes. He
wrote a treatise on math&
matics and a book on Maimo-
nedes that was published
when he was 17.
As army chaplain. Rabbi
Goren was popular with men
of all ranks, non.observant as
well as observant soldiers. He
earned his wings as a para-
trooper and ruled once that
the Torah could be dropped
by parachute over a battle-
field even though religious
law forbids throwing the
Holy Scriptures. Rabbi Go-
ren said that if it is securely
wrapped and enclosed in a
box the Torah can not be
said to have been thrown.

the chief rabbinate center in
Jerusalem, as messages
poured in from all over the
world congratulating them on
their election victories Sun-

The new Sephardic chief
rabbi, Ovadiah Yosef, already
installed himself and his staff '
in the Hekhal Shlomo and
began working Monday morn-
ing. The staff of Rabbi Shlo-
mo Goren, newly elected Ash-
kenazic chief rabbi, preced-
ed him to Hekhal Shlomo in
the office previously occu-
pied by former Chief Rabbi
Isser Yehuda Unterman.
Goren's "coronation" will
take place in Jerusalem Nov.

fclially crowned in the Old

City during the Hanuka week

in December. Both rabbis
will continue to serve as the
Ashkenazic and Sephardic
chief rabbis of Tel Aviv, re-
spectively, until successors
are elected, probably not for
a year.
Both Rabbi Goren and Rab-
bi Yosef are regarded as lib-
eral in their interpretation of
Halakha, and for that rea-
son their candidacy, at least
that of Rabbi Goren, was
strongly supported by the
government.
Rabbi Yosef, who an-
nounced his candidacy only
10 days before the elections
and whose upset vi ctory
came as a surprise, is con-
sidered more "enlightened"
than his predecessor, the 76-
year-old Rabbi Yitzhak Nis-
sim.
Israelis generally place
high hopes in the ability of
the two new chief rabbis to
find fair solutions to prob-
lems that have bitterly di-
vided the religious and non-
religious segments of the pop-
ulation.
