U.S. Willing to Take Syrian Jews,
Damascus Government Advised

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The United States "has made
known directly" to the Syrian
government "its willingness
to welcome Syrian Jews and
to make available imigrant
visas for those with relatives
in the United States," the
White House has said in a
letter made public this week.
"Though the post-Munich
climate is not helpful,"
Richard K. Cook, deputy as-
sistant to President Nixon
for congressional relations,
wrote to Rep. Edward I.
Koch (N.Y.), who had asked
for White House intervention
for the approximately 4,000
Syrian Jews, "I understand
that this initiative has not
yet been officially rejected."
In addition, according to
Cook's letter to Congressman
Koch, who made it available,
the United States has been
making "quiet diplomatic ef-
forts through third govern-
ments and other organiza-
tions to urge the Syrians to
allow the emigration of Sy-
rian Jews" and has been
"expressing its concern" in
the United Nations and other
forums regarding their
"plight."
Syria broke off diplomatic
relations with the United
States as a result of the Six-
Day War.
At present, Syrian authori-
ties are holding an American
citizen of reported Jewish
origin.

He is Jonathan Bates. a
New York graduate student
by a
being secretly tried
military court M Damascus
for alleged espionage.
Bates spent sonic months

in Israel before he was ar-
rested in Syria last Feb. 9.
State Department spokes-
man John King said the de-
partment learned only in re-
cent days of Bates' arrest
and trial. American interests
are handled by the Italian
Embassy in Damascus.
King said Bates is the son
of Prof. Ralph Bates of New
York, whom he described as
a British subject.
The Bates case was linked
to the arrest by Syrian
authorities a month ago of
Maj. Robert H. Barrett, as-
sistant military attache of
the U. S. Embassy in Am-
man. Maj. Barrett was seized
by Syrian police while in
transit from Jordan to Leb-
anon,
King disclosed that Deya
Fattel, an official of the
Syrian Mission to the United
Nations, has been served
notice that his U. S. visa has
been revoked as of Oct. 2.
The department spokesman
refused to disclose the reason

He said the notice was
