Nucleus of Israeli Cooperative
Invites Others to Join Effort

The nucleus of a future co-
operative settlement in Is-
,- rael, which has been forming
in the Detroit-Ann Arbor
area, invites interested par-
ties to its next meeting 3
p.m. Sunday at the home of

ERIC ROSENOW

and

his

Continentals

Ava Goldberg, 1036 S. Main,
Arbor.
The nucleus, or garin, is
being established by a group
of local young adults and in
its statement of principles
"views itself as a free urban
cooperative, providing a non-
: coercive framework for the
members to function as
fellow workers and human
beings, hopefully leading to
a closer and closer feeling of
social bond between them."

At
present, there is a
strong emphasis in social
service professions, such as
social work, medicine and
education. But there is ample
opportunity for other work
interests.

Although most of the garin
members will live in the
same neighborhood, there
will be no compulsion to do
so. Income from both group
and individual work will be
pooled and re-divided equally
among members, "both in
order to establish a feeling
of social equality and so that
each member will have her
or his own financial re-
sources and not be entirely
dependent on the group."
Interested persons may call
Joel Kaplan, 548.4593; David
Wolok, 399-1260; Janet Green-
hut (Ann Arbor), 764-4640;
or Phil Bloch (Oakland Uni-
versity), 377-2721.
Transportation to the meet-
ing will be provided from
Detroit and Rochester.

George McGovern scotched
a few rumors Monday eve-
ning, before delivering his
speech at the Democratic din-
ner in the Raleigh House.
It is too early to discuss
Cabinet composition, but he
certainly would not surround
himself with people who hold
contrary views to his foreign
policies. He alluded primar-
ily to his attitude on the Mid-
dle East and his position of
friendship for Israel and de-
fense of Israel's security.
Then there was the prob-
lem that was being created
for him by Republican cam-
paign material which charg-
ed that one of his staff mem-
bers, Gary Hart, had adopt-
ed a view critical of Israel.
Hart had told a George
Washington University stu-
dent newspaper that his chief
should have "condemned Is-
rael for its attacks on Le-

SEN. GEORGE McGOVERN

"I am a Jew and an
American, I am for McGov-
ern, so are many of my
friends here — they are non-
Jews as well as Jews — and
we don't vote as Jews but
as free men who have a right
to pick our candidate," he
said. "We are for McGovern.
If the person who might wor
ship next to me in the tem-
ple choose to vote for the
Republican, he has the same
right I have. But I don't
make Israel an issue. My
candidate will not betray the
American policy, and I feel
safe about Israel and Ameri-

MRS. BARRY RAVITZ

Barbara Diane Hochman

The bridegroom is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Maury Ravitz
of Evergreen Rd., Southfield.

(Two matters which caused
concern over Sen. McGov-
ern's policies were clarified
by the Democratic candidate
on Wednesday. McGovern re-
affirmed his pledge "to re-
tain sufficient American
power in the Middle East to
ensure that there is no doubt
of our commitment to Is-
rael's security." On the
question of "quotas" he said:
"I am opposed to quotas that
serve to limit the access of
any group to the fruits of our
society . - It is my belief
that both the Democratic and
Republican candidates should
be clearly on the public
record on this important sub-
