WOMEN'S DIVISION

Cliches such as "Never underestimate the power of a woman" have their basis in truth. The

"woman-power" of Federation is easily assessible when the accomplishments of these committed

The Division has a two-fold program: one dedicated to a year-round educational program; the

other, fund-raising for the Allied Jewish Campaign-Israel Emergency Fund.

The educational program is comprised of several forums, seminars, and institutes. There is also

a growing, informally-structured program of "communiteas" which introduce Federation and its

workings to small groups of women invited as guests of an active Division leader.

The Institute is an annual event which, in 1971, dealt with one's responsibility to the local com-

munity and to the continuing problems of oppressed Jews in other countries. The December meeting

Problems facing women who feel the pressure of being asked to "do more" in the community

when their home and family already demand most of their energy were discussed at a symposium on

identity entitled "The Three Faces of Me ... self, family, and community" in September 1972. The

again a Division record had been broken: 1000 workers had raised nearly $1,500,000.

JUNIOR DIVISION

Members of the Junior Division have become increasingly involved in Federation activities through
an expanded liaison program and through an increasing participation in the Allied Jewish Campaign-
Israel Emergency Fund Drive.

The Junior liaison program includes representatives of the Division as participants in most board and

committee meetings. This exposure to the workings of both Federation and its agencies has given the
Juniors greater awareness of the changes occurring within the Jewish community. The Division has

created a group to study in depth the role of the agencies, their philosophy, and their effect upon future
generations.

This awareness also has resulted in a greater Junior participation in Campaign. Learning more about

the legitimate and valid needs, both local and overseas, has stimulated our volunteers to giving and
raising increasingly larger funds each year. Beyond the $80,000 contributed for the 1972 drive, there
is the significant fact that 300 workers increased the number of Junior Division pledges by sixty percent.

In 1966 the Junior Division in cooperation with the Detroit Board of Education began to co-sponsor

a summer tutorial project for students needing remedial help in reading and math. When the federal
government recently began to fund similar programs, the Junior Division undertook to find new projects
as worthy as the successful tutorial program. Junior committees have been exploring new areas of in-
terest. A pilot program will be launched next month.

The open board meetings of the Junior Division have attracted a large attendance. Reflecting Junior

interest in a variety of subjects ranging from Soviet Jewry to drugs, they have featured public figures

such as Dean William Haber of the University of Michigan, Oakland County Prosecuting Attorney

Thomas Plunkett, and Lewis S. Grossman, president of the Detroit Service Group.

The enthusiasm for ongoing programs and the willingness to expand their efforts in the realm of

community service through Campaign and special projects are two facts which make the Junior Divi-

sion the vehicle through which young Jewish men and women, married and single, can express their
identity with the Jewish community.
