where "I thought I'd never
be able to go back."
Zaritsky pointed out that
180,000 Arabs visited Israel
this summer. Most took Jobs
for the summer. Some asked
to remain permanently. Af-
ter completing customs, they
were permitted to travel
freely, visiting relatives and
touring the country by bus.
Few signs of Israel occupa-
tion were apparent.
Not all responses to Zarit-
sky's questions were posi-
tive. One man from Kuwait
who still thinks of himself as
a Palestinian voiced his
anger at being able to come
only as a visitor. Another,
who asked to remain in
Israel, complained that "the
Arab government misled us"
about Israel.
The Arab visitors and
Israeli natives mingle free-
ly on the beach at Nahariya
although there is no conver-
sation, said Zaritsky. The
only difficulties arise when
there is an occasional ruckus

Zaritsky said he learned
"that the Palestine Libera-
tion Organization has very
little support. Most Palestin-
ians are not about to try to
drive Israel into the sea."

summer visitors program
finally was aired Tuesday
evening, a month after it was
pre-empted so the station
could report on the tragic
events transpiring at the
Olympic Games in Munich.
NBC-TV's "First Tues-
day" included in its segment
on the visitors program in-
terviews with Palestinians
who are permitted to visit
their relatives on the West
Bank and then tour Israel
proper.
Most of those interviewed
by producer Avrom Zaritsky
were described as moderates
who accept the reality of
Israel. One, a woman from
a prominent Palestinian fam-
ily who originally lived in
Nablus, was an enthusiastic
visitor on this, her fourth
trip to Israel. Describing
her reaction and that of
other visiting Arabs, she
said:
"On the first visit, there
was a grudge. On the second
visit, a little less. Now there
is a much better feeling."
She described the Israelis
she has met as "very very
friendly and understandable.
