Posthumous honors were
bestowed upon Saul R. Levin
with the dedication of the
Saul R. Levin School at the
Southern Michigan Prison.
One of Michigan's most dis-
tinguished penologists, Levin
had dedicated much of his
energy toward improvement
of conditions in Michigan
prisons. He was a member
of the Michigan Corrections
Commission.
A prominent attorney, he
was- equally interested in
foreign trade and in estab-
lishing good relations be-
tween the United States and
the Latin American coun-
tries. As Honduran consul
in Detroit he was a leader in
the consular corps here.
His sons reached high
ranks politically, Sander Le-
vin, a former member of
the Michigan State Senate,
was Democratic nominee for
governor two years ago. His
younger son, Carl, is a mem-
ber of the Detroit Common
Council. His widow, Bess,
and daughter, Hannah Glad-
stone, are deeply interested
in civic, Jewish and political
affairs here.

modern educational facilities
for Southern Michigan Pris-
on's trusty inmates.
The six-room school pro-
vides high school courses
days and college courses
nights on a scale at least
three times greater than the
trusty division had before.
A $3,600 donation from the
Saul R. Levin Foundation
activated the school project,

which attracted $28,637 in
Law Enforcement Assistance
Act grants and permitted the
prison to contribute its share
with inmate labor during
construction.
Gus Harrison, former cor-
rections director who re-
signed to establish the state
lottery, delivered the dedica-
tory address, in which he
said:
"Saul Levin was a simple,
unpretentious m a ■ with
strong convictions. He was
'nterested is this work and
progressive. This f a cility
would have done much to
please him. This is a modest
facility, but I'm sure that
ander the present leadership
much good will be accom•
'dished here.
"This is a small beginning
in trustyland. This repre-
sents a tremendous stride
down the road. We are grate-
ful for federal funding, state
aid and the Levin contribu-
ion."
