It is especially fitting at a joyous occa- sion like a wedding, when the hilarity of the moment is liah , e to mislead people into thinking that current conditions are ideal and do not need any improvement. In the Jewish way of thinking, no situa- tion is ideal as long as the Temple in Jerusalem hes not been re- constructed. The general idea is that were the Temple to have been already reconstructed, man- kind would have achieved univer- sal peace which is, indeed, a far cry from our present situation. Also, on2 of the Psalms speaks of the consequences which could occur should "Jerusalem be forgotten." It is, perhaps, a number of these types of customs that was respon- sible for the tenacity with which the Jewish people clung to the ideal of Zion until some measure of restoration, such as the present state of Israel, took place. Jewish custom requires the bridegroom and bride to have attendants called "unterfuehr- ers." The Talmud (Eurbin 18:B) tells us that the Almighty Himself either provided or Himself was the attendant for the wedding of Adam and Eve. One source in the Midrash tells us that angels were the attendants. Generally, two rea- sons are given. One is that bride and bridegroom are likened to king and queen on their wedding day. Just as kings and queens have attendants so do brides and bridegrooms. This idea is one of Judaism's most beautiful examples of the explanation of the human being. The second reason involves the general concept of "Gemilat liasadim." This means that human beings are expected to extend to each other acts of grace and cour- tesy, especially at important occa- sions. Thus, at a ceremony like a wedding, bride and bridegroom should feel the cooperative and friendly hand of others in the form of attendants at their wedding. The ideal of happiness can never be achieved without the friendship and cooperation of one's fellow man. t.
