Converts in Israel

Total 2,288 Since '481

JERUSALEM (ZINS)
Since Israel's establishment
as a state in 1948, there
have been 4,010 applications
= by non-Jews for conversion
to Judaism, of which only
2,288 were completed.
A total of 1,558 applicants
were invited to renew their
cases after a year, but chose
to drop their applications.
Some foreigners who were
not entitled to remain in the
country, were under the im-
pression that by converting
they would be entitled to the
privileges of an Oleh.

marriages have come to Is-

are in majority. Of the 2,288
accepted convert s, 1,89'7
were from mixed marriages.

Israel Says 'Thanks' to Detroit
With Torch of Independence

A gift from the people of
Israel to the people of De-
troit and Michigan got a
ceremonious welcome Tues-
day afternoon, when a Torch
of Independence arrived here
from the Jewish State, at the
start of its 25th anniversary
year.
On hand to accept the
torch, which will remain on
view all year in the lobby of
the Jewish Center, were
Governor Milliken and De-
troit Common Councilman
Mel Ravitz, as well as Jewish
communal leaders Alan
Schwartz, president of the
Jewish Welfare Federation;
Lewis Grossman, vice presi-

dent of the Jewish Commun-
ity Council, who chaired the
program; and N. Brewster
Broder, president of the Jew-
ish Center.
The torch, whose journey
began with a lighting cere-
mony in Jerusalem by Presi-
dent Zalman Shazar, was
flown to the United States
by El Al Israel Airlines.
It was transferred to De-
troit on American Airlines,
and an olympic-style relay
by Detroit young people
brought the torch from the
10 Mile Jewish Center to the
main building on Curtis and
Meyers, where the formal
presentation took place.
The relay, in which mem-
bers of Hashomer Hatzair
and Habonim Zionist youth
took part, drew attention all
along the route, down 10
Mile to Coolidge, down Coo-
lidge-Schafer to Seven Mile,
down Seven Mile to Meyers
and from there to Curtis.

A police car accompanied
the runners, consisting of 11
pairs of boys and girls. While
one of the pair carried the
torch, the other ran along-
side, wearing a ribbon with
