Mrs. Roosevelt became a
staunch supporter of Zion-

absorptive capacity data pro-

Weizmann, Dr. Milton Stein-

the guidance from the long-
time friend of the Roosevelt
family Dr. Stephen S. Wise.
The Roosevelt-lbn Saud ep-
isode receives partial clarifi-
cation in the Lash book. Mrs.
Roosevelt is quoted stating
that her husband "felt that
he has not succeeded with
Ibn Saud."
Mrs. Roosevelt fought ar-
duously for the granting of
100,000 visas for survivors
from Nazism prior to the
emergence of the state of Is-
rael. In the course of time
she supported the Palestine
partition plan and when ob-
stacles were placed on the
road towards implementation
of American support for Is-
rael she took a strong stand,
defying the oil interests, the
claims of Secretary of De-
fense James Forrestal and
challenged the position of
President Truman and Sec-

Americans' right to join a

nificance in Lash's book.
The dangerous trusteeship
proposal was fought by,Mrs.
FDR and she risked her
membership as the U.S. del-
egate to the UN in order
to attain justice for the young
Israel state. The alarm bell
she sounded helped avoid a
crisis and a possible tragedy,
and she therefore has left
a legacy of friendship for
Jewry and for Israel that is
unmatched in its signifi-
cance. Because her earlier
attitudes even bordered on a
measure of prejudice, which
was quickly abondoned, her
friendship became a mark of
great and mutual dignity.
Of course, the Israel and
Zionist issues are only part
of a great book—one of the
most impressive historical
records about a very tense
period in history and about
a great lady.
She was a fearless lady,
as an argument with Cardi-
nal Spellman proved. She
had a sense of justice, as
many , incidents recorded by
Lash show. She had courage
in politics and her friend-
ship with Adlai Stevenson
was an indication of an ap-
preciation of intellect.
(If there are errors in
Lash's book they are very,
very minor. For instance, he
refers to Adele—Mrs. Da-
vid M. — Levy as the daugh-
ter of Lessing Rosenwald.
She is the sister of Less-
ing.)
