Menahem Begin, leader of the British Mandate in

the Irgun Zvai Leumi, aim
of which was to rid Pales-
tine of foreign occupation
and to obtain independence.
At the height of his activi-
ties, the British placed a
price of 10,000 pounds ster-
ling on his head. His ex-
periences in the dramatic
days before the proclama-
tion of the state are re-
counted in his book "Re-
volt," which has been trans-
lated into English and many
European languages.
Begin was elected to the
first Knesset and to all sub-
sequent Knessets in which
he has been the leader of
the official opposition.
Throughout the past 20 years,
he has been a member of
the Knesset Committee on
Foreign Affairs and Security.
