Career of Titan
Is Traced by
Ex-Detroiter

Detroit native Stanley
Brown, who started his
career as a financial writer
with McGraw-Hill and went
on to become an editor at
Business Week and Fortune,
has put his financial exper-
tise into a book on "The Rise,
Fall and Return of a Texas
Titan"—James J. Ling.
Ling is considered perhaps
the biggest conglomerate
builder of them all, having
parlayed a mere $2,000 into
a $70,000,000 business (on
paper), only to have it
crumble around him 20 years

Brown, who closely ob-
served Ling's legendary
career, offers more than a
biography of a .businessman.
He documents business ex-
cesses in the 1960s, when the
stock market zoomed and
instant millionaires were be-
ing made every day. .
In 1646, Ling scraped to-
gether $2,000 to form an elec.
trig contracting business.
Within three years, be was
bidding for work on air force
bases and In 1955 went pub-
Ile. Within 14 years, be con-
trolled the nation's 14th
largest industrial combine,
Ling-Temco-Vought. In 1970,
his empire fell.
In gathering information
for the book, Brown spent
many hours with Ling. He
now says that Ling is neither
tyrant or megalomaniac,
"but he shares with Napoleon
and Hitler an ability to con-
trol men with his powers of
intuition." It took Brown
three years to write the book.
He told a reporter that
Detroit's business atmos-
phere had its effect on his
early years. "One of my
earliest memories," he said,
"was seeing a big parade
and asking my mother why
she didn't want to stop and
watch it_ 'They're celebrating
Henry Ford's birthday,' she
said, 'and we don't celebrate
that.'" Brown Is the son of
Mrs. Elizabeth H. Brown ref
Greenfield Ave.
