African Chief
Career of Service Marks Shapero's 80 Years Praises Jews
Pharmacy, Philanthropy in Equal Measure
Ever since he served as a
chief pharmacist's mate dur-
ing World War I, Nate S.
Shapero's career in phar-
macy has been a series of
successes. But Shapero, who
will observe- his 80th birth-
day on Sept. 2, has broad-
ened his interests still fur-
ther, serving the Jewish
community with great dis-
tinction.
Shapero, honorary chair-
man of the board of Cunning-
ham Drug Stores, Inc., has
long been active in the Jew-
ish Welfare Federation, of
which his son-in-law, Alan
Schwartz is current presi-
dent. Shapero made local
Jewish history of sorts when,
in 1946, he chaired the Allied
Jewish Campaign, the first
to top the $2,000,000 mark.
In 1965, Shapero was
named the recipient of the
Biitzel Memorial Award for
his outstanding contributions
to the Jewish community. He
is past president of Sinai
Hospital and Temple Beth
El; a member of the board
of the Joint Distribution
Committee, Detroit Service
Group, Jewish Center and
Sinai Hospital; and a mem-
ber of the Federation Board
of Governors. He also is a
former trustee of the Union
of American Hebrew Congre-
gations.
Always interested in edu-
cation (he is a graduate of
Ferris Institute, class of '21),
Shapero and the Cunningham
Foundation donated $500.000
to build the Shapero School
of Nursing at Sinai Hospital.
His name also is borne by
the school of pharmacy build-
ing at Wayne• State Uni-
versity.

JOHANNESBURG (JTA)
— Speaking to a large gath-
ering of Durban Jews at
the Durban Jewish Club,
Chief Gatsha Buthelezi, chief
minister of KwaZulu, the Zu-
lu homeland, paid tribute to
"those Jewish South Africans
who hav -a stuck their necks
out for the dispossessed and
the powerless,, in South Af-
rica.
'This is the first time the
'head of an African homeland
has been the guest of the
Jewish community.
Chief Buthelezi said, "I be-
lieve as you do in the God
of Abraham, and I believe
that we are all creatures of
His creation, and I believe
that it is His hand that has
inspired you to want .me, as
your black countryman, to
come to your club at this par-
ticular time to have this kind
of social intercourse which is
bound to make us understand
each other better."
He also said the the black
people in South Africa iden-
tify their situation with that
of the Israelites in biblical
Egypt and derived inspira-
tion from the Jewish advance
to freedom.
Chief Buthelezi appealed
to the Jewish group to help
his nation to "stand on our
own feet,' a struggle made
harder by the fact that Af-
ricans were at an economic
and educational disadvan-
tage.
He said even though "a
white skin is a badge of se-
curity in South Africa," there
still is racial prejudice
against Jews. He expressed
the hope that Jewish South
Africans were among those
working to save South Afri-
ca from destruction.
