RAMAT-GAN — The ninth
volume in the Bar-Ilan an-
nual series has been publish-
ed. The volume, divided into
two books, is dedicated to
the memory of Haim Moshe
Shapiro, who was minister
of the interior and chairman
of the executive council of
Bar-Ilan University.

The first book is devoted
to studies in Judaica and the
humanities, and the second
to social sciences. The He-
brew articles are summar-
ized in English, and there
are Hebrew summaries of
those in English.

CALVACADE OF BANDS,
the production on the Masonic
Auditorium stage, Oct. 12,
stars Frankie Carle, Bob
Crosby, Freddy Martin and
special guest singer, Mar-
garet Whiting. This quartet
of artists was carefully chos-
en to insure that "Caval-
cade" would offer a variety
of distinctive styles.

Editor, The Jewish News:
In the Sept. 8 issue you
'eltured an article assailing
the authors of "0 Jerusa-
'ern" for supposedly false
- eporting of the famous, or
hould I say infamous Deir
Yassin incident., Since my
synagogue, Bech Achim. will
'eature one of the authors,
Larry Collins, in the Bertha
- le'n Memorial Lecture Oct.
16, allow me to make a few
^omments in connection with
his criticism:
The authors in 573 pages
weave a brilliant story about
the epic of 1948, the story of
the battle of Jerusalem, the
birth of the state of Israel.
The controversial story of
Deir Yassin is told in "0
Jerusalem" in 10 pages, 272-
282. The authors tell both of
the attack by the Irgun and
the Stern Gang on the village
against the orders of Mr.
Shaltiel, the Jerusalem com-
mander of the Hagana, and
they tell of the atrocities
that were presumably com-
mitted there. They also state
in a footnote (page 276)
that: the Irgun and Stern
Gang's leadership had al-
ways denied the excesses at-
tributed to them by the
Arabs, maintaining that the
killing which took place was
a result of the Arab opposi-
tion to their attack.
The story of Deir Yassin
is not a pleasant one, the
authors of "0 Jerusalem"
may have leaned over in
quoting the Arab side of the
fight, but again, on the whole
the book tells magnificently
the story of the redemeption
of Jerusalem in 1948.
The Jewish community of
Detroit is invited to the lec-
ture by one of th authors,
Larry Collins, Oct. 16, at our
social hall. The lecture, be-
cause of its importance (it
will be the only one by either
author in the Detroit area)
is free to the public. An op-
portunity will be given to
those desiring to question
Larry Collins about the Deir
Yassir incident or any other
phase of the book "0 Jeru-
salem."

Charges Candidate
Has Anti-Israel Stand

Editor, The Jewish News:
The National Committee
for an Effective Congress de-
ceives its contributors. The
NCEC conceals from its sup-
porters that some of the
"progressive" ca ndidates
backed by them favor taking
Jerusalem from Israel, for-
cing Israel back to the 1967
borders and turning over
questions of Israel's future
to the United Nations. (See
Jewish News Letter Box July
and Aug. 25).
One of the candidates sup-
ported by contributions to the
NCEC is Rep. William D.
Hathaway, running for the
Senate seat from Maine.
Rep. Hathaway, in his posi-
tion paper on the Middle
East, makes the following
points:
1). U. S. should support all
international diplomatic ef-
forts through the United Na-
tions;
2). Jerusalem should be
established as an interna-
tionalized city;
3). The U. S. should state a
firm disapproval of both the
provocative guerrilla raids
and the strong reprisals cus-
tomarily taken by Israel;
4.) It will be necessary to
achieve a viable balance of
power in the area, military,
economic and political; and
5.) Any peace settlement
will have to include Israeli
withdrawal from some or all
territories occupied in the
June 1967 War.

Asks to Insure
Against Terror Ex-Student Recalls

Editor, The Jewish News:
This is a suggested plan to
end, or at least minimize the
Arab terror attacks.
All that is required to halt
these attacks, is to insure —
literally — that such future
attacks, by virtue of an en-
ormous insurance policy, re-
sult in tremendous financial
gain, rather than loss, for
Israel.
What I suggest is a world-
wide commitment, by either,
or both, the people or gov-
ernments of the great ma-
jority of countries, that ab-
hor such atrocities, to pledge
such a huge recompense for
Israeli losses due to Arab at-
tacks, as to make any fur-
ther attacks self-defeating.
I suggest that the U.S.
government undertake such
a plan, on the international
level, while the Jewish com-
munity in every city, town,
and village, all over the
world, organize a campaign

Late David Zwick

Editor, The Jewish News:
was shocked to learn of
the assing of Rabbi David
Zw k in a recent issue of
e Jewish News. As one of
my teachers, a man who ra-
diated genuine warmth and
inspired love for the Torah
and its teachings, he will be
sorely missed. He will be re-
called by over a generation
of students as an educator
who embodied the patience
of Hillel and served as a liv-
ing example of Shammai's
saying: Receive every man
