fact that the leaders of the

were resolved to begin a
counter-campaign by collect-
ing no less than 60.000 signa-

On July 2, 1928, I cabled
the Jewish Telegraphic

Jewish community leaders in
Moscow had begun gather-

to the government not to
transform their largest syna-
gogues into a Workers' Club,

of 60.000 signatures. The So -

Characteristic of the atti

speech he delivered in Mos
cow a short time later—on
Nov. 13—at a celebration of
the 100th birthday of the
world-renowned great flu,-
‘-ian writer, Lev Tulstoy.
Lunatcharski compared Tol-
stoy's liberal ideals with the
Pentateuch . ''Just as Tolstoy
took the part of the peasant,
against their enslavers. so ,
also did the Bible... Lanai

Such a reference to the
Bible in Moscow at that tints
was t.articularly significant.
