The Best of Everything
BACK FROM A FEW days
in Toronto . . . and the town
is still growing . . . plenty
of places to go . . to eat
and drink ... but no "name"
entertainment except the
ones who come to the Cana-
dian National Exposition .. .
The S.R.O. Bar in the Hyatt
Regency House, is exactly
that — for standing only!
. . Went to The Bagel for
some eggs and onions —
couldn't get a toasted bagel
. .. We bake them here and
they're hot anyway!" . .
Cashier at The Bagel at least
apologized when taking dis-
count on our American
money . . Mr. Tony's is
now Top of Tony's, with new
owner . . Had so-so meal
at A. J.'s, with Israeli cos-
metician stylist Tova Shmaltz
and Grace and Steve Lutwak,
son of Evelyn and Lou Lut-
wak of Windsor . . . Was
Steve's 30th birthday . .
Caesar salad brought from
kitchen and sent right back
. . we like it made in front
of us . . Waiter said they
couldn't make them at tables
because of place's size, but
Crepes Suzette, yes! . . .
Figure that one out ... Har-
vey. M. Wallbanger isn't only-
a drink ... it's name of a fast
order steak house in Toronto
. . The Restaurant (that's
the name) has elegant decor,
3 long wine list and interna-
tional food with French
touch . . . We fell in love
with Hearts in Cream for
dessert, cold cucumber soup,
ing Wheel's Lieb Rosenberg's
contention that international
food doesn't have to be ex-
pensive . . Make reserva-
tions two days in advance at
this tiny elegant dining room
that changes its menu every
two weeks . .Toronto's only
topnotch dining room near
the airport is the Burgundy
Room in the Constellation
Hotel . . . The Dover Sole
au Champagne is unmatched
anywhere, and blue trout
comes from the fish tank
just minutes before cooking
. . Folks at the Inn on the
Park like the Vintage Room
for its dependably delicious
crepes, carrot vichyssoise
and fine service ... Hy Beck
makes his own corned beef
at Switzer's.
IF YOU'RE too young to
remember, McKinney's Cot-
ton Pickers were among the
best jazz bands of its era
during the late '20s and early
'30s . . . Only Dave Wilborn,
vocalist and trombonist, is
still living ... and he's part
of "The New McKinney's
Cotton Pickers," led by Dave
Hutson at the Top of the
Pouch.
WANT TO HAVE SOME
FUN? .. . Go out to the Pier
500 on Jefferson west of
Southfield and see George
Young and The Youngsters
. . Excellent musicians and
showmen . . . drums, sax,
organ and George plays al-
most everything (trombone,
guitar, etc.) plus joking and
smoked sturgeon and fresh stage antics that even in-
Dover sole . . . The Troy clude showing movies .

• BAR MITZVAS
couple of days in advance
for lighting and staging re.
hearsals . . . in adherence
to their ways of perfection
. . . The gals will be backed
by four of their own musi-
cians included in a 20-piece
all-star orchestra . . . under
direction of arranger Jerry
Graff . . . Will be called
"World of the Barry Sisters"
. . . a two-hour concert
broken into two parts . . .
with the lassies going into
the realms of Bacharach,
Webb, rock, pops and show
tunes.
BEA BEA BENSON at the
Royal Ascot on Southfield in
Lincoln Park, is an unin-
hibited master of the risque
ad lib as she sings while
tingling the piano.
FIRST ANNIVERSARY of
the Grogshop at Stouffer's
Northland Inn was most in-
teresting . . Dinner upstairs
in the quiet surroundings of
the Coach and Four ... then
downstairs to the swinging.
seemingly endless musical
jive . . . A pleasure to see
young folks dressed so neat
and behaving themselves so
well .
PARADISO CAFE on Wood-
ward continues to reign as
one of the top Italian-Ameri-
can restaurants in Detroit
. . . Owned by Marcella and
Dan Moody, Paradiso's is
about ready to celebrate its
40th year in existence . . . a
great record for a very fine
dining spot.

WHEN JACKIE KANNON
returns to Detroit for his en-
gagement Sept. 11-16 at the
Michigan Palace, he'll bring
bark nostalgia of yesteryears
when he appeared at the
little Gay Haven and was
such a big draw that it soon
expanded into an entire
block . . . memories of the
many years before, in De-
troit, when he used to prac-
tice and rehearse signing at
the home on Allendale of
THE BARRY SISTERS, Hilda and Jack Erman, with
Claire and Merna, who tome Hilda's aunt, Selma Klein,
into town on a one-slighter, playing piano for him . . .
