Humility Defined
The essential meaning of humil-
ity, as it grew up in the Jewish
soul, is the knowledge of the posi-
tion which man has in infinity and
eternity; it is the full religious
feeling of life in the man who
knows that he has been created
by God. Thus there is in it nothing
deliberate or intentional, nothing
which crushes or oppresses; it is
no self-humiliation, but it is in-
sight into man's own existence,
the realization that it has come
into being through God. It is the
mood which pervades life when it
becomes conscious of its profound-
ness, when it listens within to
itself; it is• the sound in which the
harmony of the great creation—
the music of the spheres one is in-

In Image of God
By A. D. Gordon in
Am Adam (1920)
We were the first to an-
nounce that man was created
in the image of God. We
must go further and state:
the people must be created
in the image of God. Not be-
cause we are better than
others but because we have
borne and suffered all that
this demands. At the cost of
our torment which is unpar-
ailed in world history, we
have bought the right to be
the first in this creation and
by force of our torment we
shall find the strength for
this creation.
The great thing in this
world is not so much where
we stand, as in what direc-
tion we are moving. —Oliver
W. Holmes.
THAT'S A FACT
Deceive no one, be he Jew or
Zionism and Americanism
There is no inconsistency be-
tween loyalty to America and
loyalty to Jewry. The Jewish spirit,
the product of our religion, and ex-
periences, is essentially I modern
and essentially American. Not
since the destruction of the Tem-
ple have the Jews in spirit and in
—_ 'deals been so fully in harmony
with the noblest aspirations of the
country in which they lived.
America's fundamental law
seeks to make real the brother-
hood of man. That brotherhood be-
came the Jewish fundamental law
more than 2,500 years ago. Ameri-
ca's insistent demand in the 20th
Century is for social justice. That
also has been the Jews' striving
for ages. Their affliction as well
as their religion has prepared the
Jewis for effective democracy .
Persecution broadened their sym-

is unbefitting a Jew. . . . If a con-

the former must live up to it even

Jewry's Greatest Treasure
By Anatole Leroy-Beaulieu
In "Israel Among the Nations"
Learning was for 2,000 years
the sole claim of distinction rec-
ognized by Israel. "The scholar,"
says the Talmud, "takes preced-
ence over the king." Israel re-
mained faithful to this precept
throughout all her humiliations.
Whenever, in Christian or Moslem
lands, a hostile hand closed her
schools, the rabbis crossed the
seas to reopen their academies
in a distant country. Like the
legendary Wandering Jew, the
flickering torch of Jewish scholar-
ship thus passed from East to
West, from North to South, chang-
ing every two or three hundred
years, from one country to an-
other.
Whenever a royal edict com-
manded them to leave, within
three months, the country in
which their fathers had
been
buried and their sons had been
born, the treasure which the Jews
were most anxious to carry away
with them was their books.

Diaspora's Problem
By RABBI A. Y. KOOK
Apart from the nourishment it
receives from the fife-giving dew
of the holiness of Eretz Yisrael,
Jewry in the diaspora has no real
foundation and lives only by the
power of a vision, and by the
memory of our glory, i.e., by the
past and the future. But there is
a limit to the power of such a vision
to carry the burden of life and
to give direction to the career of
a people—and this limit seems al-
ready to have been reached.
Diaspora Jewry is therefore disin-
tegrating at an alarming rate, and
there is no hope for it unless it
replants itself by the wellspring of
real life, of inherent sanctity, which
can be found only in Eretz Yisrael.

Have you ever heard the
word, Darshan?
It's Hebrew for "preach-
er."
You expect the preacher to
be a professional, don't you
And in most cases he is.
But in a Conservative syna-
gogue in North Hollywood,
Calif., the pulpiteer of a Sat-
urday morning might be a
layman.
Indeed, so many laymen at
the Valley Jewish Commun-
ity Center and Temple have
preached so many excellent
sermons that dozens of them
have been published.
Edited by the past presi-
dent of the synagogue, Ar-
I thur Hoffnung, that book
For Love of Torah," is one
of the most amazing volumes
in American Jewish history.
The book contains observa-
I tions on the meaning of Ju-
daism for today's living by
no less than 103 members
of that congregation.
But since the publication
of the book, which has been
given the Solomon Shechter
Award by the United Syna-
gogue, dozens of other mem-
bers of this remarkable shul
have stood up before the con-
gregation to expound the se-
dra of the week.
Credit must go to Rabbi
Aaron Wise for inspiring his
people to use their minds so
dexterously. So m e rabbis
would be jealous that laymen
have excelled in preaching.
But Rabbi Wise is pleased
and proud. You will too if
you get a copy of that book.
The book contains not only
the thoughts of many Dar-
shanim but also of many a
darshanit. What's that, you
ask? A female preacher;
they also abound at that ex-
ceptional synagogue in Cali-
fornia.
