The Bridge That Solves Human Problems

By JOSEPH ZURIL
JERUSALEM — Allenby
Bridge. To the Israeli author
ities it is a cease-fire line.
The Jordanians call it "the
bridge of return to conquered
lands." For many who cross
over it throughout the year,
Allenby Bridge is the place
where emotional meetings be-
tween relatives and the sad
partings of families take
place. For others it is a
means for import and export
of agricultural produce and

r

industrial goods.
Allenby Bridge has under.
gone many changes during
the last five years. It was
over this bridge that the Jor-
danian units retreated during
the Six-Day War, while tens
of thousands of Arabs- mostly
refugees followed closely
behind them. The bridge was
damaged then, and the the
heavy pressure on it caused
thousands of refugees to cross
the Jordan river tied on to
barrels.

A visit to Allenby Bridge
is like a visit to any ordinary
frontier post. There are
hardly any armed soldiers in
the vicinity—either on the
Jordanian or Israeli side.
The Israeli soldier posted on
one side of the bridge and
the Jordanian soldier stand-
ing on the other communi-
cate in a silent language.
Every day is a "normal
day" on Allenby Bridge.
Families come and go,
trucks loaded with fruits
and plastic goods leave for
Jordan and return with
household goods. Drivers

have adjusted easily to the
realities of the situation
between Israel and Jordan.
Near the bridge, on the
Israeli side, the Israeli
number plate is replaced
by a Jordanian one. On the
return trip, on the other
side of the bridge, the
Israeli number plate is
replaced.
Security measures are
stringent, and customs con-
trol also is strict. Many at-
tempts were made in the past

and ammunition from Jordan

individuals. Now smuggling
has been stopped almost
completely.
