Alton Averts Teacher Strike

JERUSALEM (JTA) — A
threatened teachers strike in
Israel was averted last week
when the teachers! union
agreed to a proposal by Dep-
uty Minister Yigal Alton to
set up a special commkttee to
deal with their major out-
standing grievance — over-
crowded classrooms.
The strike had been threat-
ened for last Friday, the first

day of the new school term.
Shalom Levin, secretary of
the teachers union demanded
that the maximum number
of pupils in elementary and
secondary school classes be
reduced from 40 to 35 and in
kindergartens from 35 to 30
The union also wants the
education ministry to train
new teachers and build new
classrooms.

'0 Jerusalem' Authors Are Assailed
for False Reports on Deir Yassin

Protests are mounting
against the Collins-Lapierre
report of the Deir Yassin in-
cident in their best-selling "0
Jerusalem."
Although an annotation in
the hook gives the reply of
the Zionist Revisionist Party
and of Menahem Begin, the
manner of presentation of
the case has created resent-
•
ment.
Dr. Jacob Rubin. noted
author. whose recently pub-
lished "True 'False About Is-
rael" tackles similar issues.
assails the "0 Jerusalem"
aporoach as prejudiced.
Former Detroiter Sol Dann,
who now resides in San
Diego. has inaugurated a
campaign against the spread
of "0 Jerusalem" and its
claim for accuracy.
Ma int- in the condemnations
of "0 Jerusalem" is the
view of Robert St. John, dis-
tinguished author who has
been to Israel more than 20
times and has written out-
standing works on Israel and
Israelis.
Robert St. John's "Eban"
has lust come off the press
and his publishers, Double-
day, expect it to be a long-
time best seller.
Commenting on "0 Jeru- 1
salem." St. John charges •
that its prejudiced view of
the Deir Yassin case will
cause it to become a part of
Arab anti-Israel propaganda.
The onetime war correspon-
dent who was in Israel in
1948 states:
"On Page 272, very senti-
mentally, they say the men
of Deir Yassin until the
massacre had used their
guns only to hunt rabbits
and to welcome a certain
girl-bride, Alia Darwish,
about whom they tell a beau-
tiful story that has absolute-
ly nothing to do with any-
thing • except to prejudice
the reader in favor of the I
Arabs of Deir Yassin.
"Jacob Rubin in 'True and
False About Israel' says the
loudspeakers DID broadcast
a warning to the villagers.
'0 Jerusalem' says it did not.
"The '0 Jerusalem' au-
thors in a footnote say they
got all their facts from
Jewish sources, the report
of the International Red
Cross and three reports
. forwarded to the chief
secretary of the Palestine
government . . . by Rich-
ard fatting, assistant in-
specter general of the
. criminal investigation divi-
sion.' They imply that in
this manner they avoided
any possibility of falling
victim to Arab propaganda.
But they neglect to say
which of the so-called
`facts' came from which
source.
"They say Begin's 'The
Revolt' contains the Irgun
version, but they give abso-
lutely nothing of Begin's side
of the story. They say they
interviewed some of the
Stern men, yet they fail to
give the reader what they
said. They give the names of
three Irgun men interviewed,
but nothing about what they
said
" '0 Jerusalem' says noth-
ing about the Arab ruse of
sending men to meet the at-
tackers with a white flag,
but when the Jews advanced

It is best for all to leave
each man free to acquire
property as fast as he can—
Abraham Lincoln

they were attacked by a hail
of bullets.

" '0 Jerusalem' says noth-
ing about Iraqi troops being
in the village.
" '0 Jerusalem' clearly
implies that Deir Yassin
triggered the mass flight of
Arabs from Israel. Rubin
says: 'The first signs of
large-scale Arab migration
from Israeli territory was
noted . . during the two
weeks preceding the Deir
Yassin incident.'

"After reading the Deir
Yassin chapter in '0 Jeru-
salem' I was ill ... physical-
ly and spiritually and men-
tally. I didn't sleep that
night. Never in all the World
War II stories of atrocities
or in the Vietnam atrocity
reports have I read of such
subhuman behavior ... tear-
ing children in two, raping
old women, ripping the ears
off young women to get their
earrings, etc , etc. ad nau-
seum.

"If I were to believe this
book I would be ashamed
that I had ever written fav-
orably about Israel or had
ever helped a country popu-
lated by even a few of such
-
- -

People. But I don't believe
it.
"I know that war is war,
but as a war correspondent
I have covered three Israeli
wars and I have always said
in my lectures that Israeli
soldiers do not behave abom-
nibably, even under stress."
