The king, who addressed a press
conference at his summer palace
in Rabat, said: "I want to use
this opportunity to tell my Jewish

to fear and that- nothing will be
changed in their situation."

At the press conference, an in-

king's anti-Egyptian sentiments.

When an Egyptian journalist
sought to ask a question, Hassan
interrupted him with: - First let

Oz's 'My Michael'
Gets High Rating

"My Michael," published by
Knopf, is a sensational best-seller
in Israel for its "unofficial" por-
trait of middle-class life in
Jerusalem.

The author, Amos Oz, is the
most original and highly regarded
of the young Israeli novelists. He
is the leading practitioner of a new
, mode of Hebrew fiction which is
, moving away from drab social
realism.

"My Michael," Oz's third novel
and his first to be translated into
English (by Nicholas de Lange in
collaboration with the author), is
probably the most successful na-
tive work of fiction ever published
in Israel. It has sold more than
40,000 copies—a spectacular sale
in a country where the Hebrew-
reading population is under a mil-
lion. Praised for its literary dis-
tinction, the book was also criti-
cized in Israel for its disquieting
political and social implications.

Her husband Michael is a decent
but hopelessly unimaginative man
with whom she leads a life which
daily grows more unfulfilling. She
escapes into a fantasy world of
childhood memories and wild ad-
ventures, overshadowed by dreams
of sexual abasement to the hand-
some Arab twins she knew in her
early years — sharp contrasts with
the dull routine of a Jerusalem
housewife. When the semblance of
external order disappears from
her life, control over her inner
chaos also slips away. -
