White House Sends Bnai Brith lutitiates 8500,000 Drive

WASHINGTON —Bnai Brith has single intensive week in Septem-
Veterans l'arle ■ -

The
HOUSTON (JTA)
House sent Elliot L. Richardson.
secretary of health. education and
welfare, to address the Jew ish War
Veterans convention here within
hours of being charged by the
.IWV's national commander with
deliberately avoiding speeches be
fore Jewish groups.
The White House responded to a
telegram in which JWV leader Jer•
ome B. Cohen told President Nix-
on: "We have been trying des-
perately for six months to obtain
a high Republican spokesman
from the administration to articu-
late your position on public issues
before our 77th annual national
convention currently in session in
Houston, Tex. The White House has
been advised that the Democratic
candidate for Vice President, Sar-
gent Shriver, is scheduled to ap-
pear on Friday. As a politically
nonpartisan organization, the JWV
deems the White House position in
refusing to dispatch such a speaker
demeaning."
Warren Adler. JWV spokes-
man. added to the JTA that since
its Inception nearly four years
ago, the Nixon administration
"just didn't recognize Jewish
groups as very important."
Joseph J. Sisco, assistant secre-
tary of state for Near Eastern and
South Asian affairs -and the White
House's resident Middle East ex-
pert, addressed the convention in
an appearance arranged in the
spring. But Adler explained that
the JWV considers Sisco "a ca-
reer diplomat and not a political
spokesman for the administration."

The emergency action, ratified
by Bnai Brith's board of governors,
includes posting a former govern-
ment relief specialist in Wilkes-
Barre, Pa., to help "cut through
bureaucratic delay" for stricken
residents still unfamiliar with gov-
ernmental procedures in applying
for federal and state assistance.
Solomon Rosenbaum of Fitch-
burg, Mass., who heads the Bnai
Brith drive, said that the funds
will be directed principally to the
Wyoming Valley region in Penn-
sylvania—which takes in Wilkes-
Barre and Harrisburg—and Elmira,
N.Y., whose Jewish communities
were struck hardest by the storm.
David M. Blumberg, president of
Bnai Brith, proposed the emer-
gency campaign to the board at its
mid-year meeting earlier this month.
Blumberg, after an inspection
tour of Wilkes-Barre and its neigh-
boring suburban community of
Kingston, described the ruin caused
by a rampaging Susquehanna River
as "the worst I've ever seen, as
saddening and shocking as any
bombed-out area I saw during
World War II."
He said that "every single mem-
ber" of Bnai Brith in the area had
suffered severe losses in the flood.
"The lucky ones had their homes
flooded and much of their posses-
sions ruined. The unlucky ones had
their homes or businesses—some-
times both—completely demolish-
ed." he said.
Rosenbaum said that the
$500,000 campaign would be con-
ducted "as an urgent appeal to

A tough West Pointer was asked
whether he knew music. "I know
two songs," he replied. "One- is
Yankee Doodle and the other ain't."
Many Jews know two Jewish
songs. One is Ayn Kehlohaynu,
which means "There is none like
our God."
The second song also comes at
the close of the service. It's Adon
Olam. Adon means Lord. Olam
means universe or eternity. So the
song may be translated Lord of
the Universe, or Eternal Lord.
The familiar song has been ren-
dered into rhymed English by one
of the most gifted rabbis in the
world, Dr. Ben Zion Bokser. Senior
rabbi of the synagogue in Forest
Hills, N.Y., Dr. Bokser has written
many books clarifying our faith.

The Synagogue Council of Amer-
ica said in New York it had sent
an official delegation to Wilkes-
Barre to meet with rabbis and
community leaders and to tour the
stricken area to inspect damages
to Jewish institutions.
Rabbi Judah Nadich of New
York, president of the Rabbinical
Assembly, the association of Con-
servative rabbis, said he hoped the
visit of the SCA delegation would
help strengthen the determination
of the Wilkes-Barre Jewish com-
munity to rebuild its communal
life.
Rabbi Henry Siegman, SCA ex-
ecutive vice-president, presented
the Wilkes-Barre religious leaders
with a check for $15,000, to be
used "for the rebuilding of the
community."

The Lord Eternal reigned supreme
When all the world was naught.
His name is praised by every life
His gracious oil/ has wrought.

Perry Shertz, a Wilkes-Barre at-
torney and former president of
Bnai Brith District 3, reported that
only 200 Jewish families have been
able to return to their homes.
Twelve hundred other Jewish fam-
ilies are still dislocated, living in
trailers or motels, or with rela-
tives or friends in surrounding
communities and elsewhere, Shertz
said.
A number of despondent persons
who had "lost almost everything"
had attempted suicide and 150
Jewish families "are dispirited to
the point where they've decided to
leave the area, although we're try-
ing to persuade them to stay,"
Shertz said.
