92nd Psalm on Sabbath

BY RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX

(Copyright 1972. JTA Inc.)

The 92nd Psalm is assigned for
special reading on the Sabbath.
The rabbis in the Mishna (Tamid
7:4) say that this Psalm is the one
which refers to the eschatalogical
period in the future of the world
when all will be peaceful and ful-
fillment will be reached.
In Jewish tradition, the Sabbath
is a weekly sample which the ob-
servant Jew is given to taste, re-
sembling this future state of affairs
in the world. The future state is
described as a world in which
every day will be like the Sabbath.
Thus this Psalm has been assigned
for special recitation on the Sab-
bath day.
The rabbis are quoted as saying
that if the people of Israel would
observe two consecutive Sabbaths
the golden age of the future would
arrive. Hence, the universal ob-
servance of the Sabbath is the
prerequisite of the achievement
of the eschatalogical period in
history. Thus we see another con-
nection between this Psalm and
the Sabbath.
